Builders
Club is
Kiwanis organization that provides an
opportunity for middle school students to work
together in service to school and community. Its
goal is to develop leadership qualities in young
people through experiences in volunteer
community service. Members experience the thrill
of accomplishment and the satisfaction of
knowing their efforts make a difference for
those they help. Our club sponsors a Builders

Kiwanis
Key Club
is a Kiwanis organization for high school
students that conduct an active program of
service in the school and community. Its
objectives include the development of
initiative, leadership, and good citizenship. It
is the largest high school service organization
in the world, with over 210,000 members. Our
Kiwanis Club sponsors
Key Clubs at La Caņada High school with 170 members and
Flintridge Prep with 90 members. The students in these clubs build
their own organizations with guidance from outstanding school
personnel and Kiwanis members and they build and serve their
community and their country through special work service projects.
They gain tremendous exposure and training in learning management
skills in doing these tasks and they have the opportunity to
attend regional and national Key Club Conventions where they
compete against other clubs on the quality of their service
projects while at the same time meeting, having fun and expanding
their friendships with other Key Clubbers across the country. Our
Key Clubs are recognized as being among the best in the nation.
Kiwanis
Terrific Kid Awards
is a student
recognition program that promotes character
development, self-esteem, and perseverance.
Students work with their classroom teacher and
establish goals to improve behavior, peer
relationships, attendance, or schoolwork.
Students then work toward achieving the goal
during a specific time period. The teachers and
principal determine the best schedule for
recognition. Some schools recognize Terrific
Kids during each grading period; others
recognize students more often.
TERRIFIC is an acronym meaning:
Thoughtful Enthusiastic
Respectful Responsible
Inclusive Friendly
Inquisitive Capable.
Our Kiwanis Club recognizes excellent students
from La
Caņada
Elementary and Palm
Crest Elementary at our weekly Kiwanis Meetings
The KeyLeader program is a Kiwanis International program designed to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. During their three days at a Key Leader weekend high school students explore new ideas, accomplish exciting challenges and build enduring friendships in a safe, supportive environment. The Key Leader program is built on five essential principles. The five principles are:
Personal Integrity: Doing the right thing
Personal Growth: Developing in mind, body and spirit
Respect: Showing consideration for self, others, and property
Building Community: Developing relationships to achieve positive goals
Pursuit of Excellence: Expecting and achieving the best
Being a Key Leader is all about achieving excellence and becoming a true leader - at home, at school, in the community, and in the world. A Key Leader graduate from Ohio wrote: "Each day there was absolutely amazing. Our lead facilitator was an inspiration to every person in the room, and I am proud to say that she has helped me believe in myself and my abilities to become a leader."
The Kiwanis KeyLeader program serves 14-18 year old students; it is not necessary to be a member of Kiwanis or a Key Club to participate in Key Leader. Instructors are professional experts in youth leadership and have received additional training from Kiwanis International; they usually fly in to lead the activities, provide information, stimulate discussions, organize smaller group activities and interactive events.
There are five scheduled KeyLeader weekends scheduled for 2011 in California and Nevada. Our Kiwanis Club works with other local organizations to identify and encourage students to attend. Our Club also provides scholarship money for eligible students and adult chaperones at the KeyLeader camps. Our long-term goal is to establish a KeyLeader camp in Los Angeles County. The KeyLeader program is a joint effort of Kiwanis International and all Kiwanis Clubs in California and Nevada.
