Soap Box Derby Update #3

LOS ANGELES FOOTHILLS SOAP BOX SPONSORS NAME THREE PASADENA AREA CHARITIES TO RACE THEIR DERBY CARS

Kids to be selected to compete May 27-28 in this officially sanctioned derby.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE (CA), May 4, 2000 – Three Pasadena-area charities have been singled out to participate in the upcoming Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby, being presented by the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada on May 27-28 in the City of La Cañada Flintridge.

The charities –Sycamore Home for Boys (Altadena), the Harambee Family Center and the Pasadena Youth Christian Center (both in Pasadena) – will be offered a Stock-class derby car to race during the Memorial Weekend event. The racecars are the property of several event sponsors and Kiwanis Club of La Cañada members, among whom are Jay Radadi, owner of Jay’s Shell Service (on Angeles Crest in La Cañada), and Foothill area investment counselor Robert Bender. These individuals have paid between $5,000 and $1,000 to sponsor the upcoming race. Their sponsorship package included one racecar.

Each charity will be responsible for selecting one child, age 9-16 (as of August 1, 2000), to compete in the derby on behalf of these individual event sponsors. "This event is deemed to become an annual race," explains race director Ed Moulton, the driving force behind the event and an active Kiwanis Club of La Cañada member. "Once an individual or corporation purchases a sponsorship package, they own the race car. These charities have been selected to receive the Radadi and Bender cars for this year's race. Next year, these sponsors may elect to select either the same charities or find another with whom to participate. It will be up to them," he noted.

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada’s primary purpose is to help youth of all social and financial backgrounds. Proceeds from the Memorial Day event will be directed to youth causes in Los Angeles County. Local youth volunteer offers to help…A Saturday morning car clinic is being staged now through May 27 (race day) to guide participants and their parents in the assembly of the car kits being sold by Sport Chalet. If a child selected by one of the three charities cannot attend these special car clinics, La Cañada High School senior Theron Price, who is skilled in auto mechanics, has volunteered to help guide the charities’ participants with the assembly of their cars at the Pasadena or Altadena locations. More on Sponsorships…

There are three types of sponsorship packages available, according to Moulton. "We are seeking one $7,500 sponsor. This package offers a major sponsor an opportunity to be spotlighted before, during and after the event with signage and ads in our program. We have three $2,500 packages available and 20 $1,000 packages still available, as well. All of these packages include a derby car. The sponsors may elect to select their own to race in the derby, or, as is the case with Jay Radadi and Robert Bender, they may elect to have the charity select a deserving kid to compete in the race. Either way, this is a wonderful opportunity for kids and parents or guardians to bond and share a positive experience together," he said. "Winners from the three divisions will be transported, all expenses paid, to Akron, OH, to compete in the national All-American Soap Box Derby competition."
