SOAP BOX DERBY ENTRY DEADLINE IS MAY 20TH

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE (CA), April 26, 2000 – The deadline for entering the Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby has been set for May 20, 2000, according to Ed Moulton, Derby director and a member of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada, the service club presenting this event.

The All-American Soap Box Derby-sanctioned race invites boys and girls, aged 9-16 (as of August 1, 2000), from throughout Los Angeles County, to compete in three different class races (Stock, Super Stock and Masters) Memorial Weekend (May 27-28) on Michigan Hill, at the end of Foothill Blvd. (just below the entrance to St. Francis High School), in La Cañada. The race starts at 10:30 a.m. (May 27) and at 1:00 p.m. (May 28).

Winners of the three divisions (Stock, Super Stock and Masters) in this local race will ride in the annual Fiesta Days Memorial Day Parade in La Canada on Monday, May 29. There will be an awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Park (on Foothill Blvd.) during the annual Fiesta Days picnic, following the parade. The winners will also be flown to Akron, Ohio, in July 2000 to compete in the national All-American Soap Box Derby.

Soap Box Derby kits are available at Sport Chalet in La Canada only for as low as $420, including a helmet and tires. Special clinics are being staged each Saturday until race weekend (May 27-28) at Sport Chalet. Parents and kids interested in building a car from the All-American race sanctioned kits are welcome to attend these clinics (10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.). Each car must be constructed by its driver. Adult help is optional.

Entry fees are $35 per person (includes T-shirt). Entry forms are available at 459 Foothill Blvd. (Bridgestone Tire store) in La Cañada.
