Soap Box Derby Update #1 L.A. County Kids Can Participate in Nationally Sanctioned All-American races LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE (CA), April 10 – The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada is presenting the first All-American Soap Box Derby sanctioned event in Los Angeles County during Memorial Weekend. This is the first sanctioned local race of its kind in the county, according to Ed Moulton, Derby director and a member of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada. Dubbed the "Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby," this event invites boys and girls, aged 9-16 (as of August 1, 2000), from throughout Los Angeles County, to compete in three different class races (Stock, Super Stock and Masters) on May 27 and May 28. The City of La Cañada Flintridge, near Jet Propulsion Laboratory, well known for blasting high-powered rockets into space, is the host city for this first-time event. Ironically, this event will have absolutely nothing to do with powerful engines. All a kid will need to compete will be a car, a hill and gravity! Soap Box Derby kits are available at any Sport Chalet location throughout Los Angeles County for as low as $420, including a helmet and tires. The La Cañada store, headquarters for the sporting goods retailer, will stage weekly Saturday clinics for kids and their parents interested in building a car from the All-American race sanctioned kits. Each car must be constructed by its driver. Adult help is optional. Most cars can be completed within two days. Entry fees are $35 per person (includes an official Los Angeles Foothills SoapBox Derby T-shirt). A Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby office has been established at 459 Foothill Blvd. (inside the Bridgestone Tire store) in La Cañada. Entry forms, derby race rules and sponsorship opportunities are available by calling 818.790.9901, or via E-mail: soapboxderby@lacanadakiwanis.org, or online at www.lacanadakiwanis.org. |
