Fifth Annual Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby has been scheduled for
Saturday, May 29, 2004 here in La Cañada Flintridge, CA. This
will be the official race sanctioned by the world-famous All-American
Soap Box Derby of Akron, Ohio. The winners of this Greater Los Angeles race will be provided financial support to go to Akron to
compete in the National Championships on July 31, 2003.
Since
1934, the All-American Soap Box Derby has grown into a very
popular sport. It affords families an opportunity to bond with
their kids as they build and race their own cars.
La
Cañada’s Soap Box Derby is considered by All-American as a
"licensed local" race. Any driver who wins his/her
licensed All-American local race must represent the local in the
All-American in July.
Become part of a sport that is an American tradition. All-American Soap Box Derby racing has been a part of the American landscape since 1934. It is good, clean fun that encourages families to work together to meet the challenge of gravity racing. The racers are usually evenly divided between boys and girls. All kids that meet the age requirements are welcome to race. Rally races are scheduled throughout Southern California from September through
June.
Once again, two great organizations, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada and the California Family Soap Box Derby Association, will join forces to host the largest official All-American Soap Box Derby event in greater Los Angeles on May
29, 2004. This race will determine the racers that will represent Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern and San Luis
Obispo counties in the 66th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, OH. This race is open to all residents of these counties that meet the age requirements listed below. The race will be divided into three separate
divisions, Stock, Super Stock and Masters division.
For
the last three Years the two clubs hosted the Los Angeles All-American Soap Box Derby event.

To participate in this race, racers must sign-in and all cars must receive a detailed safety and construction inspection on Friday, May
28th, between 4:30 and 7:00 PM.

just east of the 210 Foothill Freeway, in the

Limits: Stock and Super Stock racers are limited to boys and girls, ages 8

Master racers ages range between 10 (by May 29, 2004) through age 17 (must

Rules:

All AASBD
2004 rules will apply. It is the racer's and the racer's support team's responsibility to read, understand and comply with all rules. Use the check sheet supplied in the Official AASBD Car Construction Plans to check your car prior to submitting it for inspection. Copies of the rules are packaged with the car kits. Additional copies can be purchased for a nominal fee from All-American Soap Box Derby or can be downloaded for free from
www.aasbd.org.

All participants must
wear
the T-shirts that will be supplied.
NOTE: As a new AASBD requirement this year stock, and super stock racers must
wear the new, AASBD-issued “bicycle-style” helmet. Masters racers are required to wear the traditional AASBD
helmet, as in years past.

All cars will be impounded immediately after being inspected and weighed. Once impounded no further work will be permitted. Do your spindle alignments before inspection.
-
Tools will not be permitted in the pit area. Race damage can be repaired or brake pads can be changed only at the designated repair stations using the tools supplied.

Only one "handler" will be allowed in the pit area to assist each racer. The cars must be constructed using only the official AASBD components supplied with the kit or as specifically excepted in the 2003 rules.

Cars must be constructed exactly as outlined in either the
2003 or 2004 car construction plans.
-
2000 and older kits must have the hardware upgraded to
2004 specifications.

Axles must be
1997 or newer issue.

Note: The "butcher block" floor boards are soft. Be careful not to over tighten bolts that pass through the floor board. This can cause the washers on the bottom of the floor board to sink excessively into the floorboard. Excess washer recess will be checked by sliding a flat washer across the bottom of the floorboard. It must be stopped by the R or R1 washer or axle plate surrounding each bolt head before it can contact a bolt head.

Any protests against other entries must be lodged with a race official prior to the start of the race.
(Exception: car is altered during the race.)

Inspection:
All cars must be inspected and weighed-in on Friday, May 28th. The inspections will take place in the St. Francis parking structure, Foothill Blvd. between Crown Ave. and Daleridge Rd. Racers must be signed in between
4:30 PM and 7:00 PM.
There will be no inspections or registration on the day of the race!
The pre-race inspection helps ensure the safety of the racers and the fairness of the race. You will be given an opportunity to make corrections if required and time permits. Bring the tools you feel you may need to make final adjustments. Use the inspection check list provided with the AASBD car construction plans to check your car ahead of time. First-time builders should attend one of the car clinics offered
on
April 24th and May 15th.

Stock - 200 lbs. Total, car and driver, 100 lbs. maximum tail
weight

Super Stock - 230 lbs. Total, car and driver, 122.5 lbs. maximum tail weight. (15 lbs. tail heavy)

Masters - 255 lbs. Total, car and driver, 127.5 lbs. maximum tail weight.
Wheels: Official AASBD Z-Glass wheels in all divisions. Wheels must be retained by AASBD-approved wheel clips. Mark your name and
wheel location (i.e. left front, right rear) clearly on each wheel. No added lubrication after the race starts. You will be swapping wheels with your opponents and may not receive your wheels back until the end of the race. Please ensure you have retrieved your wheels at the end of the day. If you must leave early, please notify a race official to retrieve your wheels.
DON'T LEAVE WITH WHEELS THAT ARE NOT YOURS!
Race Format: The race will be
double elimination, lane and wheel swap, timer differential. We reserve the right to alter the race format based on weather and track conditions on the day of the race.

Where
do I get a car?
Cars
are purchased as kits. Cars kits (including new helmet) may be purchased from the Sport
Chalet in La Cañada (920 Foothill Boulevard ) or by ordering from the International
Soap Box Derby Inc. The cars must be constructed by the driver,
with adult help optional. Prices range from $560 for a Stock Division Kit to
$750 for a Masters Division Kit.
New bicycle-style helmets can also be purchased for about $13.

Choosing the right kit for your child is dependent on the child's size and weight. Here are some general guidelines or come and try one on at one of the Car Building
Clinics:

Stock kits are best for smaller racers, up to about 5' and 100 lbs. Most Stock racers are 9 to 12 years old.

Super Stock kits are best for medium-to-large racers, up to about 5' 8' and 150 lbs. Super Stock racers range from
8 to 16 years old.

Masters kits require advanced construction skills to build. The racer must be at least 10 years old and can be up to about 5'10 and 175 lbs. Masters racers range from 10 to 17 years old.
Free car-building clinics
and unofficial inspections will be available at the Sports Chalet on the dates listed below. Experienced Soap Box Derby car builders will be available to answer questions or assist in car construction. First-time builders should attend one of these clinics. Bring your racer, car kit and tools.
