The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Sept 20, 2000

THEME - REYNOLDS SWAN SONG

Jeanne Broberg, Editor

OPENING: President Jim Reynolds, Martha Crockett and Ed Moulton got us started. Bill Scherkey helped us Pledge our Allegiance. Dick DeGrey quoted from James Sievers, former La Cañada Kiwanis Club speaker and now poet laureate: Our forefather believed...in our right to vote...thousands of them fought and died...with blood on their hands...they bravely wrote...their beliefs into laws...and signed them with pride. They gave us then...our right to choose...who will lead us...and how to live...a precious right..that we must use...freedom...is our most precious gift...And I like it here. Dick then prayed that we might all remember that the greatest joy in life is serving others. GUESTS: Tim Willert of The Foothill Leader (insisted on paying for his own lunch), Noah Kim and Kasey Hurlbutt represented LCHS Key Club, Bill Nicholl, Jim Reynolds and Hal Crockett brought their better halves. Plus, we had 4 golden prospective members: David Tate, Bill Bodell, dentist Dr. Mark Page, and Dr. Sue Leabo of La Cañada Unified School District.

Listing all would double our postage, but congratulations to everyone. Some highlights: "Heart of the Club Award" to Tom Smith for his compassion and sincere love and consideration for each of us at times of illness or grieving. "Legion of Honor Awards" for members who have proved Kiwaniian longevity: Pete Palermo 25 years, Allan Perry, Sr 25 years, Bill Nicholl 25 years, Donald Corbett 35 years, Paul Bobzin 35 years, Bill Abelmann 35 years, Roger Gurley 45 years, and Tom Smith 45 years. Those who completed the Kiwanis goals, that is the "GAMES" (GROWTH: adding to our membership; ADMINISTRATION: club fundraising and board meeting participation; MEETINGS: attending 5 Interclubs or perfect attendance of 3 months; EDUCATION: Conventions, etc; SERVICE: Service Projects) Lofty priorities for all of us. P.S.S. The mysterious initials above represent the following who need Interclubs: Chung, Fulwood, Horwith, Olson, Perry Jr. , Restivo, Stokes & Toffel. ACT NOW, THE LIST IS GETTING SHORT, SO IS TIME.
