The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – Sept 6, 2000 Jeanne Broberg, Editor OPENING: Our Navy President Jim Reynolds is sure Shirley DeGrey was playing Navy music to get us started. Ed Moulton and Shirley furthered that with "America the Beautiful" and "Anchors Away". Joyce Flynn in navy blue stripes led the Flag Salute and Don Davidson is to be thanked for the invocation. (Ask Daryal Gant about the check from the Last Supper) Guests: Joan Peters, back from "Around the World" in 80 or so days, introduced Bob Sommerville with Frank Williams, Navy Joyce with husband Pat Flynn, our veteran member Francie Crichton with Jack Orr, Nana Smith with Joel, and Tim Willert of The Foothill Leader with Ed Moulton. INDUCTION: Sheila Cook had the honor of presenting Dale Stenzel, now our Club's newest member. Dale is a product of LA, La Cañada, and La Cañada schools. (John Muir is her Alma Mater, she is barely too old to have graduated from La Cañada High). She has 2 grown children and 4 grandchildren. Volunteering would appear to be her vocation as her resume includes gratis work on the 84 Olympics, the World Cup, helping at LAX and assisting in the parenting of needy children. Her energies have allowed her to combine her volunteering with 30 years of managing the Pecos Bill restaurant in Burbank. Sheila can be reached at 4443 Rockland, LCF 957-5035. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS - HIXSON AWARD: Joel Smith presented the George F. Hixson Fellow Award in honor of Joe Masters and his service to Kiwanis. Lillian, an honorary member of Kiwanis, and Joel's guest, accepted the award. This award represents $1,000 raised toward the ongoing $75 million Kiwanis International Goal to save lives from goiter problems and other iodine deficiency diseases. Since just 5cents can supply the iodine to save a life, this award helps 20,000 people and is a most fitting tribute to honor the memory of Joe. MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE Paul Westmoreland is official, certificate presented by Tom Slaughter. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Inez Pickering is recuperating very well. Anthony Portantino always wants us to remember those Children's Hospital Buckets on the table. He was happy to report the bank robber suspect has been arrested (and he's not a member of our club). Patrick Flynn introduced Rear Admiral John Higginson, USN Retired.
Admiral Higginson retired about seven years ago after 34 years
active duty as a Naval Aviator. He has extensive expertise in
anti-submarine and amphibious warfare and has had experience in
seven commands including 2 helicopter carriers. John's last
assignment was senior officer and only Navy flag officer in the
Long Beach/Los Angeles area. In this capacity he was in charge of
17,000 active duty personnel in four counties and was responsible
for 41 ships. Admiral Higginson had the background experience to
very ably remind us of current cutbacks in the Navy and the
ongoing Naval needs of our United States of America. Freedom is
not free, we as a nation must always be on the watch and not let
our strength diminish. Flag Salute: Lorie Gonia, Invocation: Tom Gilfoy, Raffle: Dick DeGrey (lucky winner), Sergeant of Arms: Dale Stenzel (welcome to La Cañada Kiwanis)
