The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – September 05, 2001 "HE WHO LAUGHS LAST, THINKS SLOWEST" "PREOPERATIVE PREPARATION": The talented and dedicated Martha Crockett set the mood with her delightful classic and skillful piano renditions. Meanwhile, the early-bird Reception Committee: Frank Williams, Lou Roberts, Jim Reynolds, George Lutes, Phil Hammons et al was busy greeting the arrivals. For some reason, we started gastronomic satiation on time!, as well as the meeting, (well almost). President Jim Edwards asked Ed Moulton to lead a stimulating rendition of THIS IS MY COUNTRY (with Nancy Valentine Avila!, followed by Skip Baker leading the FLAG SALUTE (spontaneously from his spot by the drink table). Phil Hammons then led us in a PRAYER. GUESTS included DRAKE "DIP" DIPREZ, long-time "buddy" of our program chairman; plus LARRY DAMAS, Program Director, JPL; Hal's MARTHA CROCKETT; SHIRLEY DE GREY, long-time "buddy" of Dick; HOLLY HANSON from Orange County, sincere friend of Norma Cunnan; ED BLADIA, recently Ashland Oregon with Tom Gilfoy; NEXT LT. GOVERNOR, PAT LIDDELL with Jim Reynolds. (Ed: Hosts: It sure would help to either enunciate, spell, or write legibly the names of our guests!) ANNOUNCEMENTS: ANTHONY PORTANTINO reminded us that we are behind in our "buckets". (Hmm)…. PAT LIDDELL encouraged purchasing the Div. III Fund Raiser ENTERTAINMENT Handbook. ED MOULTON GAVE A BIG PUSH FOR THE SATURDAY NIGHT TRAVELOGUE SERIES AND CONTEST, with "FASCINATING" PRIZES. FROSTY BOYD'S encouraging report on Bob Slattery. And something about unfortunate "role reversals". HAPPY / SAD BUCKS: KEN LOWE joined the Century Club for their 40th Anniversary. ANTHONY PORTANTINO for his pregnant wife and a delightful trip to Utah with his "capturing" daughter…(boy, does she have him where she wants him!). ELIZABETH GEORGEON enjoyed our City Hall on TV. PROGRAM: DARYAL GANT proceeded with an interminable and detailed biography of our speaker. LARRY DAMAS, JPL DEPUTY DIRECTOR , then presented a most interesting and well organized history of the "Lab", the relations with the Government and Cal Tech; the shifting into Community Manufacturing, and drawing the talents from the university. A very interesting showing of the twelve currently orbiting spacecraft, and the plans for the future. Some of the $17 million biweekly payroll for the 4700 employees, live in our area and along the San Gabriel Valley corridor.
