The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Aug 30, 2000

Jeanne Broberg, Editor

Opening:  Adorned in his Hawaiian shirt, President Jim Reynolds "Aloha-ed"us and we all thanked Martha Crockett for setting the tone with her talented piano fingers. After we all joined Ed Moulton in our Country’s Star Spangled Banner,  it was Frank Williams’ turn for the Flag Salute.  In his invocation, Phil Anderson prayed that we all live so that the preacher won’t have to lie at our funeral.  He thanked the Lord that 98% of us are honest and we elected the 2% who are not. (hmmmmmm………)

Guests:  We were introduced to the better half of the  Crockett, Wilson, and Stafford partnerships.  We even welcomed  Ollie Blanning, of Mike Antonivich’s staff, and Mike’s driver, “J.C.”  Anthony Portantino introduced Lt. Jerry Carrigan and Sgt Jim Noennick.  Ken Lowe introduced David Tate  of the San Gabriel Valley BSA.  Tim Willert of the Foothill Leader joined us and it was great to have Gloria Winkley present.  Dale Stenzel  was present and will soon be inducted.

Announcements:  Inez Pickering is doing very well after yesterday’s back surgery.  Congratulations to Paul Westmoreland on his IDD award.  A scholarship fund has been established to honor Gordon Sherer, donations welcomed.  Richard Schulhof is most appreciative of the gift to the Descanso Children’s Program.  45 classes from many school districts have been involved in the program.  Children in the classes were trained and became docents to their parents.  Over 100 teachers have been trained.

Sunday October 1st, 2:00 p.m.  Jack Hastings Memorial Gazebo dedication

Happy Bucks/Sad Bucks:  Superintendent Lorie Gonia gave 5 happy bucks for today’s remarkable opening of the LCUSD 5 schools.  Students were happily learning in their classrooms by 8:30 a.m.  LCUSD Governing Board Member (yours truly) gave 6 happy bucks, she toured the schools with Lorie this morning and witnessed all the positive education going on.  Her bucks are for the 5 schools plus 1 for her wisdom, with the rest of the Governing Board, in hiring Lorie Gonia as Superintendent.  Pete Palermo was involved in a bank robbery, very complicated, but be assured he was not the robber and he was safely, healthily at Kiwanis to tell about it.  Hal & super pianist Martha Crockett gave $58.00 to IDD because they have been married 58 years.  The truth is, Martha was married the day she was born!!!  Pat & Phil Anderson’s daughter was honored as the #1 recruiter for her firm. Ed Moulton gave a sad buck in empathy for Mr. Firestone, Paul Bobzin ---  brings up the eternal philosophical question of why sometimes bad things happen to good people.  Phil Hammons saw the dedication of Kona, HA Kiwaniians who have to travel far to their Hilo Kiwanis meetings.  (sad case, seems President Jim Reynolds has a tell-tale Hawaiian shirt on also).  More facts on the Soap Box Derby facts  keep coming to light: yes the City beat the Sheriff’s Department, but there was something to do with gravity involved.  Bill Scherkey went to his 40th High School reunion and, hey, everyone looked the same age he does.  City Manager Jerry Fulwood is very happy that his daughter ecstatically started Kindergarten in LCUSD today, he had to throw in a sad buck, cause she didn’t at all mind leaving him.  Tom Stafford is happy – he got in and out of the hospital so quickly, it all happened while Jim Reynolds was gone. Ken Lowe just celebrated his 44th anniversary (another man who robbed the cradle for a wife)

Today’s Program:  To introduce County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Pat Anderson reminded us that Los Angeles County was established in 1913.  It now has a population of 9.8 million, more than the population of 42 states.  It encompasses 4000 square miles and has a budget of $15.3 Billion.  Mike Antonovich, Supervisor of the 5th District was born in LA and attended John Marshall High School.  Supervisor Antonovich admitted to be among the 2% Philip Anderson mentioned in the invocation.  In Frosty Boyd style, he told us of the physician who operated on a file clerk and found every organ color coded, operated on a librarian and found all in alphabetical order, operated on a contractor and found there was always a little extra taken, then operated on a politician and found no guts, no heart, no spine and found the bottom and head to be interchangeable. (And here I am a politician typing this stuff)  The Supervisor explained the political nitty/gritty of several issues.  Unfortunately there has been $5 Billion spent on 17 miles of Blue Line in downtown LA taking 3 decades to do it while the 15 miles from Sierra Madre eventually into Union Station has a budget of $680 million and can be done in 1-2 years and then be extended East, as much needed.  He voted against giving free needle exchanges to dope addicts.  It still passed, but Mike sees no benefit in subsidizing addicts in their unhealthy habits which affect all of us.  Mike encouraged all of  us, as families, or through our churches or synagogues, to help recruit, or become, foster parents.  There are 60,000 children in LA County needing homes.  While working parents would not be able to take infants and small children into their homes, they could consider providing a home and parenting of an older child.  Mike pleaded voting against increasing the number on the County Board of Supervisors.  The workings of  LA County government are too cumbersome as it is.

Next Week  Sea Power…U.S. Navy, Maintaining a Credible Fleet (Ms. Edna Ralston)

Flag Salute: Lorie Gonia,  Invocation: Don Davidson,  Raffle:  Howard Backer

(Trivia question for the week:  What are the “to do or die”, required Kiwanis meetings?  Answer = 1st your induction meeting and 2nd, annually, the installation meeting- that’s a clue to what you better have on you calendar Wednesday night, September 27th)
