OPENING: President Jim Edwards thanked Guest Pianist Bill Hyland for a round of sentimental piano favorites.

GUESTS: Edwards introduced Dist. 3 Lt. Gov. Vic Legerton, and Charlie Plowman, Marilyn Kelly, Don Mazen, Fereva Kaiserman, and Anita Nardine of the Outlook, Nancy Lyon with Sandy Stenstrom, and Terry Karn, guest of Harold Arman.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Howard Backer: Asked for donations to Children's Hospital. Last year we raised $2,100. Ken Lowe, introduced LCHS Key Club faculty sponsors Mary Wolston and Mary Weaver, who cannot make meetings during the school year because they are teaching. Pat Anderson: 1) Presented Al Restivo with a wrapped gift for winning the ice-breaker contest at the Summer Social Spectacular at the Smith's house. What IS it, Al? 2) Oct 27 will be the first date of this year's Travel Adventure Series, a presentation on Mozart's teenage adventures in Italy. 3) Entertainment Books, available for $20, will be used as fundraiser. We get $10 on each book sold. More later. 4) We need RSVPs for all those attending the installation of officers luncheon, Friday, Sept. 28. Please sign up on the clipboards. 5) Installation of Patrick Liddell as lieutenant governor at the Castaways, Sept. 17.

PROGRAM: LCUSD Governing Board President Barbara Racklin introduced board members Jinny Dalbeck, Will Moffitt, and Meredith Reynolds, as well as our own Dr. Sue Leabo, assistant superintendent of Human Resources who will serve as acting superintendent, and La Cañada Teachers' Association president Richard Weld. She also used the occasion to present awards to Classified employees of the year Nancy Owen, who is in her 23rd year with the district, and Sue Price, in her 14th year. Dr. Mike Leininger, LCHS principal, accepted in their behalf. In addition, she presented Nancy Leininger, a second grade teacher at Palm Crest, with the district's Teacher of the Year award. Racklin then called on Dr. Mike Leininger, who noted following a six-year re-accreditation last year by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the High School received its 2001 AP test results. Six hundred and four tests were taken by 323 students, another all-time high for the high school. There was an 82 percent pass rate. Also, although names cannot be released until Sept. 15, the district has 12 National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists this year, up two over last year. Dr. Leininger also introduced new high school teachers who include:

  • Jennifer Alvarado, Spanish. Received her bachelor's in Spanish, a master's in psychology and four years experience at Diamond Bar High School.

  • Joe Lee, art. BS at USC, substituted at the LCHS art department last year. 10 years experience in ceramics and pottery.

  • Elaine Leibl, special ed. BA in child development, CSLA, 14 years in Pasadena Unified.

  • Cynthia Manuel1986 grad, LCHS, received her BS from Cal Poly Pomona.

  • Diane Mathis, Spanish, BS in Ed from Syracuse University, MA in bicultural-bilingual ed from U of Texas, 15 yrears.

  • Leslie Mayne, speech therapist. BA communications, USC, and MA in communicative disorders CSUF, private practice 3 years, competitive runner for 16 years.

  • Breyne Moskowitz, math. MBA computer info systems, UCLA, PH.D., linguistics, UC Berkeley, taught at UCLA, Glendale Unified, Western School for Girls.

  • Mickael Ollins, English. BA math, Ithica College, NY, and an MA in English ed from NYU, 16 years experience.

  • Kerry Martinez Rufe, English. BA, CSUF, substituted last year when a teacher left abruptly and continued the class without missing a beat.

  • Tom Traeger, geology and physics., BA and MA from UCSB.

Leinginger introduced Gaylene Van Zijll, announcing she had become 7/8 principl. Van Zijll introduced new 7/8 teachers:

  • Jasmine Altounian, math, science and GATE program. Middle school teacher in Burbank, BA and MA in psych at CSUN.

  • Erin Buoen,7/8 counselor to do a (Mon/Tues) job share with Nancy DeBoer (Weds/Thurs/Fri): MS in school counseling CSLA, member Junior League, Pasadena.

  • Simon Constantinides, science/biology, BS from UCLA, taught middle school in Pasadena, understands the small school concept, has coached basketball and volunteered at boys and girls club for 13 years.

  • Olia Jamchi, math and science. Stepped in when science teacher Cathy Clement passed away last year, BS in biology, U of Texas.

  • Kevin "K.C." Mathews, social science, football. LCHS grad, BS in Soc. Studies from Northern Ariz University.

  • Susan Ross, Spanish. BA in Spanish from Indiana U. MA, from Pepperdine. Taught ESL in Madrid 21 years, and Spanish at North Hollywood three years. Dept. Chair at Toll Middle School. Now in Pepperdine MA ed tech program.

  • Susan Scalla, English. BA in English and PE from CSUN, began in LCF in 1973 and taught high school PE and English, has a pilot's license, also worked at Palm Crest.

Van Zijll introduced Gail Crotty, director of special education and principal at Foothills School, who presented:

  • Linda Kwan, 7th and 8th graders at Foothills School, BA and MA from UCLA, a member of Asian American Journalist's Association, with experience in San Marino.

  • Sandra Schneider, BA in regular and special ed. from the U of Toledo, MA, early childhood ed., 28 years in K-6, spec. and adult ed., and as women's track, cross-country coach and club advisor.

Crotty presented LCE Principal Lily Ogden, who introduced:

  • Mandy Emory, 1st grade,a graduate in theater arts who has taught in a suburb near Dallas.

Deitra Reid, Palm Crest School, principal, introduced:

  • Joyce McNeil, special ed, BA in Soc. Science MA from San Jose state, PH.D. in Special Ed from the U. of Ill, 4 years in private practice, taught in No. Carolina, Calfornia, Georgia, Alabama.

  • Linda MacKessy, PE. BA Kansas Wesleyan, MA from Azusa Pacific. 7 years with Burbank, Arcadia, Monrovia districts.

  • Myrna McCune, 1/2-time special ed. Former volunteer and tutor. BA, UCLA in Spanish, MA in special ed, from CSLA.

  • Janet Morano, reading intervention program. BA from U of Univ. of Northern Nevada.

Donna Robinson, Paradise Canyon principal, introduced:

  • Sean Lu, 4th grade, BA in liberal studies, CSUN, computer expert, also cheerleader coach.

  • Katie Budde, 2nd grade, LCHS grad, BA in ed from USC, MA CSUF, 10 years experience; LCF Presbyterian Church.

  • Marion Darling, 2nd grade, LCF resident, BA Fla State, MÅ in criminology, teaching credential from Azusa Pacific

  • Jennifer Harris, 5th grade, BA in liberal studies from Ambassador, and MA in ed from Pepperdine, exp. in Korea and Pasadena. Her mother, Pat Harris, is 2nd-grade teacher at LCE.

  • Kimberly Kimes, gifted coordinator. BS, Cal Poly Pomona, MA in elem ed., Lehman College in NY, 26 years in all grades.
