The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Aug 28, 2002

Diane DellaValle, Guest Editor

OPENING: Having given our pianists the afternoon off, Ed Moulton got us on key and led us in America the Beautiful. Who really kept us on key? Was it our very special honored guests, the educators, who routinely sing acapella? President Pat introduced those seated at the head table: Bob Martin, who so eloquently led us in our Flag salute, yours truly, who gave our invocation, Dr. Sue Leabo, Superintendent of the La Cañada Unified School District and James Straton, Deputy Superintendent.

HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS: Carl Christensen introduced his wife of 39 years, Irene. Daryal Gant introduced his potential new member, Joel Peterson, owner of a wireless firm and our guest for the second time.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: President Pat reminded us that our September 11 meeting will be in commemoration of 9-11 as well as Clergy Recognition Day. Dr. John Day, Rev. of the La Cañada Episcopal Church will present the program. Dr. Day went to NYC to administer to those in need after 9-11. Pat also reminded us to invite guests for that meeting. Next Wednesday is Crazy Shirt Day. If you can't wear your shirt, bring it and put it on especially for us. KCET has asked us to help them man the phones for their Telethon. The Monday, 9-16 shift is open. Please contact Pat if you are interested. Paul Westmoreland announced he is running out of Kiwanis Directories. In anticipation of publishing updated ones he brought each member's page, printed on 8.5 x 11" paper, and asked us to change our respective pages as necessary. New photos can be used as well, either by input from the member or John Torrey, or taken by Paul after the meeting. The new Directories will come out shortly after the installation of officers. Barry Riedel announced our first Travelogue will be September 21 and asked us to come and enjoy this very popular series. Season tickets are available and make great gifts. Bachy Bachmayer reminded us that we have kids to help at Children's Hospital and that we have plastic tubs in front of us into which we might stuff some money. Doris Horwith requested Committee Chair people to submit their reports on a timely basis.

HAPPY, SAD AND OTHER BUCKS: With Mary Gant serving as our Sergeant of Arms, Ed Moulton celebrated his 93 year old sister 's birthday with a trip to see her, Bob Martin gave $5, two because Daryal Gant called him the Resident Intellectual at the Soap Box Derby, $2 to thank the Toffels for our summer BBQ, and one more to assure that Jack Dawson stop asking him the meaning of Fresno. Frosty Boyd paid a dollar to give us his weekly dose of humor, which we all would have gladly paid $1 to avoid. Others participated; sorry no more names. Paul Westmoreland was our secret greeter, raising our pot astronomically. Howard Baker, our Treasurer, coincidentally, won the drawing and will be glad to sell raffle tickets next week. We expect a full audit.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Super Round Robin Interclub Award: Our club is working for this award. In order to get it, we must have every member attend at least one Interclub meeting. All our members should encourage the following members to meet this obligation. Members that have not attended an Interclub are: Mark Anthony, Skip Baker, Bob Bender, Linda Bilheimer, Sheila Cook, Bob Frank, Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon, Carl Gieseke, Jerry Healey, Brian Hull, Jennifer Irizarry, Sue Leabo, Pete Palermo, Al Perry Jr, Al Perry Sr, Joan Peters, Bill Pickering, Jay Rabadi, Matt Regan, Al Restivo, Carole Rigsby, Skip Schembari, Sky Sprowles, Bill Wiederkehr.

PROGRAM: President Pat introduced Dr. Sue Leabo, Superintendent of La Cañada Unified School District. She was happy to announce, in opening, that all construction projects at our schools will be completed by the first day of school and will be within budget. She spoke of the LSUSD motto for the year, which is ABC: Achieving, Believing, Caring. She asked all present to join her in this commitment. She then introduced the School Board members: Ginny Dalbeck, President, Scott Tracy, V.P., Meredith Reynolds, Clerk, Ron Dietel and Andy Beattie. Dep.Super James Stratton, Chief Business Officer, Dave Banis. She noted that there are four LCHC grads among the new teachers. She then introduced the Principals who, in turn, introduced their new teachers. Dr. Michael Leininger, with LCHS for 15 years, serving as their Principal for four, introduced his new teachers. Principal of LCJHS, grades seven and eight, Gaylene van Zijll, introduced the new teachers in her school. Donna Robinson, Principal of Paradise Canyon Elementary; Esther Salinas, Principal of La Cañada Elementary; and Wendy Sinnette, Principal of Palm Crest Elem., introduced their new teachers. A new fourth counselor, Sally Spangler, gives LCUSD one of the lowest student/counselor ratios in the State (or was that U.S.?) Allison Horsfall, a graduate of LCHS and daughter of Bill Horsfall, our Past President in 88/89, was introduced as a new teacher. We're proud of our home town girl and of all our very impressive, well-qualified new teachers. Many of the Country's finest institutions of higher learning were represented. Dr. Leabo closed the introductions and awarded President Pat an ABC pin, offering them to all who would want one. She thanked Kiwanis for having them.

CLOSING: On behalf of the media, Charlie Plowman, Publisher of the Outlook, asked the Educators to stay behind for photos. Jim Ackland asked that our teachers take the apples home. Ed Moulton led us in a Kiwanian rendition of School Days. Wear your pin. Wear your shirt. Buy your Travelogue tickets. Attend your Interclub. Beware of the Secret Greeter.
