Meet at Church of Lighted Window at 7:00 a.m. For other later choices call Jim Edwards or Ed Moulton.

"Apple For a Teacher Day" ably organized by Sharin Orr, was truly the Day of the teacher, encompassing all the day’s activities.

Opening: V.P. Jim Edwards ably stood in for Pres. Jim (something about a submarine). Inez ably, of course, set the mood. Ed Moulton heard some extra right on key high notes on the Star Spangled Banner as the new LCHS choral director joined Eileen Ferber in that upper, upper range. In leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Tom Slaughter remembered who first taught him to pledge the flag of his country: His teachers. John Kelly, father of veteran LCHS teacher Patti Compeau, prayed for teachers, and for all of us.

Guests: LCUSD Representatives: School Board President Meredith Reynolds was joined by Board Member (Kiwanian, Bulletin Editor) Jeanne Broberg, LCTA President Richard Weld, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services Dr. Sue Leabo (whose work made today’s introductions possible), and Betsy Richman, public information officer. The Press: The Outlook- Kiwanian Eileen Ferber introduced Marilyn Kelly, Fereva Kaiserman, Jim Thach, and Anita Nardine. The Valley Sun- Kiwanian Linda Bilheimer introduced Katrina Ten. Tim Willert represented The Leader.

Announcements: Hoping to set up a scholarship in honor of Gordie Sherer through donations to the Community Scholarship Foundation. Tom Stafford is in Verdugo Hills Hospital.

Program: Chairman Sharin Orr introduced Kiwanian Lorie Gonia, LCUSD Superintendent. Lorie will bring us up to date on LCUSD at an upcoming program but reminded us that LCUSD’s quality reflects La Cañada Community Support. She thanked our Kiwanis for all it’s school support and programs. La Cañada test scores continue to improve. The District has received the money from the state and construction has begun on the library. The plumbing has been redone at Paradise Canyon and all is ready to begin school. Lorie reminded us all that the greatest factor in the success of a student is the skill and caring of the teacher. A motto for student success is "hire the best person for the job".

Paradise Canyon has a new Principal, La Cañada resident Donna Robinson who has been a principal in El Monte for 15 years. She introduced Meghan Krone, Sean Mispagel, Sara Gardiner, Scott Proctor, Lisa Mahrer, Robin Collins and Carrie Leininger. LCE Principal Lily Ogden introduced Chris Edsey, Cathy Kazy, Jane Lowry and Lorie Hopkins. Palm Crest Principal Deitra Reid thanked Kiwanis for all their support and introduced new teachers Trysha Glaser and Korey Ritter.

La Cañada High School will add 10 new teachers to its staff. Principal Mike Leininger introduced Richard Tetu, Leslie Baldwin, Arvind Arya, Shawn Polard, Marie Chandler, Lorie Marie Rios, Rene Herda, John Snyder, Cathryn Hurley and Gavin Williams. Many of these LCUSD new teachers live in La Cañada, they all come with great training and experience.
