The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Aug 16, 2000

Jack Dawson - Reporter
Jeanne Broberg, Editor

Opening: Security Alert, someone stole President Jim’s gavel. Call the Sergeant of Arms with any leads. But Ed led us in "Grand Old Flag" anyway with Paul Westmoreland leading the flag salute and Dennis Croxen reminding us of the difference between character and reputation as he led all in prayer.

Guests: Don Mazen. Flintridge Prep Kiwanis scholarship recipient Heidi Deckendorf and her mother.

Announcements:

Jim Edwards passed a roster of those who still need inter-club. If you feel guilty as you read this, you must still need an inter-club – check with Jim.

Coming up:

September 18 – new Lt. Gov. Vic Legerton – installation at Castaways.

October 1, Sunday 2:00 p.m. Dedication of the Hastings Memorial Gazebo at Glenola Park. Congratulations to Carl Christensen and troops on a great project.

Celebrations, Happy/Bucks: Don Davidson, returning from a trip to Vermont, reports lots of rain, Sharin Orr joined the Century Club for her birthday (but she must be only 40% of a century old). She went to Alaska without Jack but with her sister and mother. (Those Orrs are always traveling). Oh Dear, sad buck: Tom Smith had a cracked toilet, which flooded the house. Frosty Boyd reported something about red and purple painted sailors being marooned. (now that’s a sad buck). Jim Edwards spoke at Rotary (nice of us to loan him to them)

Programs: Mayor Dave Spence introduced Sport Chalet speakers. Joining us were Craig Leverc, CEO, and Jack Atwood who serves on the Board of Directors. In 1959 Norbert Olberz started with $4000. He bought a small Sporting Goods Store and lived with his wife in the back of the store. From that meager beginning, there are now 23 stores with around 2000 employees who bring in $175 million in sales last year. Some of the stores have added golf gear (not in LCF yet). All employees are expertly trained and work toward pro certification. The new specific Sport Chalet Plan is in progress. Approval is hoped for in November. Sport Chalet has spent $5 million so far. The North road is still in question, and Von’s needs a new store. Sport Chalet will break ground somewhere, and they want to stay in La Cañada Flintridge.

With deep regret we sadly report that Gordie Sherer died in his sleep Monday. Gordie had been a Kiwanian for over 50 years, including membership in the Westwood Club and the Montrose Club where he was president in 1954. Gordie was best known as the Kiwanis liaison with the LCHS Key Club for over 30 years. During this period the club achieved top distinction in the district for many years. For the last several years, even in failing health, he joined with the Key Club in their annual Christmas visits to local resthomes dressed as Santa, and handing out miniature Christmas trees. A kind, gentle, considerate man, we are all richer for having known him.

A memorial service will be held for Gordie at the Church of the Lighted Window Sunday August 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Next Week: Program "Apple for a Teacher Day". Come meet the new LCUSD teachers. Flag Salute: Tom Slaughter; Invocation: John Kelly,

Raffle: You won it? You are it.
