The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – Aug 14, 2002 Bill Watts, Guest Editor OPENING:
We welcomed back Shirley DeGrey as well as her artistry on the piano. PP
Jim Edwards led us in the salute to our Flag and PP Rev. Phil Anderson
presented a very appropriate invocation. "Mr. Kiwanis" and PP
& PLG Ed Moulton led us in "God Bless America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Besides the
aforementioned, PP & PLG. ED Moulton and PP Bob Martin, adorned the
head table. Pres. Pat introduced all the visiting District 3 PLG'S which
included: Dr. "Skip" Neville, G. Gerry Plotke, Dr. Robert
Torrey, Ed Moulton, Victor Legerton as well as our LG elect Joe Thompson
who will be installed at the Ontario convention (where our new Aloha
shirt color will be announced). Joe thanked all for the honor and is
looking forward to a great year.
Other guests were Margaret Watts, Fran Boyd (not
really a guest, but we need to see you more often Fran), Judy Breitman,
Ardella Horsfall, Marilyn Koonce, Bea Reynolds & Lt. Gov. elect Joe
Thompson. Even though it was Past Presidents day, and with a very tight
schedule, Pres. Pat was still in a "fine" mood and taxed all
who didn't wear pins the usual buck, except the PP's of our Club who got
nipped for $5 and the visiting PLG's were clipped for $10. The secret
greeter was PP Bob Martin with our newest member Mary Gant collecting
all the loot. Pres Pat made a special effort to fine PP Dr. Don Corbett
after he waited since his program presentation in January for the
"lost & found" precious artifact item she has keep for him
since then. Don coughed up bucks for the Century Club, which included
the celebration of his 70th birthday.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Tom Slaughter sent around the
sign-up sheet for guest editors (can you help?) and also informed us
that on our web site if you will click on "shopping" on the
bottom of the page, you can shop on the internet at many vendors (Amazon
etc.) who will credit the club for as much as 5% on any purchase you
make. (What a painless way to raise $$$ for our club!). Daryal Gant (our
new VP elect and program chairman) wants suggestions for programs
particularly if you have a speaker. Dr. Allan Perry has box seats (for
4) at the Hollywood Bowl for the performances of Aug. 31st and Sept.
7th. Call him quick for these hard to get box seats. Dave Spence said
there would be a special program at Memorial Park on Sept 11th, 8:30 am.
Pres Pat said we would have a program on Sept 11th with the Rev. John
Day as our speaker. Rev. Day was one of the Chaplains at the site of the
disaster in New York. Look out for "Crazy Shirt" day on Sept
4th. The Pres said if you're too ashamed to wear it, bring it for show
and tell. A "special thanks" to the members who put together
the great social event on August 10th under the direction of PP Bill
Scherkey. Click [Here] for photos.
SPECIAL PRESENTATION: A special presentation
was made to (who else but) PP & PLG Ed Moulton; the "Ruby K
Award" (an oval pin with a ruby on it) for sponsoring over 100 new
members to Kiwanis. Congratulation again Ed!
HAPPY SAD & OTHERS BUCKS: Were omitted due
to time constraints so save up your bucks for next week.
50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Patsy Christianson who
gets the ticket selling duty next week.
THE PROGRAM: Honoring our Past Presidents (PP)
was the name of the game as 15 PP's related the memorial events of their
year from 1959 (Ed Moulton) to 2000 (Jim Edwards). Just a few of the
highlights include: PP Dr. Breitman who said he mumbles when he talks as
it's good for his (EENT) business; PP Pete Palermo who said PP Don Ziehl
introduced him to flash cards; PP Dick DeGrey (who first thanked all for
the cards and casseroles during his and Shirley's illness) and then was
proud of the installation of the flag pole at Memorial Park which
included fly-overs by his friends in AT-6's plus a sky writer; PP Rev.
Phil Anderson who was proud of leading the establishment of the A.M.
Kiwanis Club; PP Dr. "Frosty" Boyd who got the rabies clinic
established. Although the members shouted "no jokes please",
as usual Frosty got this one in: "A cat has claws at the end of its
paws but a comma has a pause at the end of a clause". PP Bill
Scherkey whose pleasure was celebrating the 58th anniversary of our
club: PP Jim Reynolds was proud of establishing the first Soap Box
Derby; PP Jim Edwards who thanked Ed Moulton for calling him once a week
to tell him what he was supposed to be doing. Pres. Pat also introduced
all the PLG's who were in attendance and gave them the same opportunity
to tell of their year in office. Many of the PP's brought scrapbooks
from their year as well as Aloha shirts. The Pres. thanked all the
members who helped make this such a successful program under the
leadership of Jim Ackland. (That it ended on time is a miracle in
itself)
CLOSING: "Mr.Ed" led us in
"Hail Kiwanis" and the table flowers were given to the person
whose birthday was nearest the founding date of Kiwanis.
ED NOTE: PP= Past President, PLG = Past Lt.
Gov., LG = Lt. Gov.
NEXT WEEK: Flag Salute: Melinda Thompson;
Invocation: Bill Scherkey; Program Chair: Ed Moulton, Program "All
That Jaz". Jim Ackland will run the meeting in the absence of Pres.
Pat. Bulletin Editor: ??????? Coming Up: August 28 Apple for the
Teacher.
