The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – August 8, 2001

Jim Reynolds - Editor

OPENING: The call to order was made by our president, Jim Edwards, who immediately praised the beautiful music by Shirley DeGrey. Ed Moulton led us in singing God Bless America. Jim Reynolds led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Howard Backer gave the invocation. President Jim then introduced two special guests, our assistant city manager, Mark Alexander, who was here to see the program, and Sofia Portantino, who accompanied her dad, Anthony. Our special guests would be introduced later.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: President Edwards started with the announcement that he had just attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Sport Chalet office building. Next, he showed us a new award from International Pres. Bo Shafer, which we earned for achieving attendance growth in 2001. Howard Backer announced that our Kiwanis Board had agreed to start a Nancy Palermo Scholarship Fund for the YMCA. He also mentioned that Pete Palermo is starting a Nancy Palermo Foundation to raise money for the YMCA. All members interested in contributing to one or both of these foundations should contact Howard. Frosty Boyd announced that Bob Slattery had a successful plane trip back to his home town. Then, Frosty told us one of his tales that ended with the good news that "hell is full." Dick De Grey told of the tuba group that will precede the Community Band that we are cosponsoring with the city for this Sunday in the Park program (4:30 p.m., tubas; 5 p.m., band). Ed Moulton thanked the team that worked so hard on our SIZZLING SUMMER SOCIAL - Joel and Nana Smith, our hosts; Pat Anderson, Jim Edwards, Alan Gulamhusein, Matt Regan, Rhoda Backer, Shirley and Dick De Grey, Nita Lutes, Melinda Thompson, and Mark Anthony. Pat and Phil Anderson are at Sparks, Nevada for the convention.

INSTALLATION: Bob Martin and Ed Moulton introduced and inducted our new member and our new club secretary, Sandy Stenstrom. Sandy was joined by her husband, Stan. We are truly pleased by the fact that we are getting such a lovely lady to join our club and now she will also be our secretary.

HAPPY BUCKS AND CENTURY CLUB: Don Davidson is celebrating his birthday; he just spent almost a month with his daughter in Vermont, and he and Corrine are celebrating their 56th anniversary. He joined the Century Club. Jim Ackland and Jo are celebrating their 53rd anniversary; he also joined the Century Club. Jack Dawson finally had to do something about his front-end, his trucks. Tom Stafford was happy that the surgery by Dr. Toffel worked so well for him. Sandy Stenstrom gave happy bucks for all the great training that Bill Scherkey has given to prepare her for her new job. Pres. Edwards awarded some fines earned at our great SIZZLING SUMMER SOCIAL.

PROGRAM: Bob Wallace introduced Ritch Wells, public information officer with the City of Glendale. Ritch told of the start of the Public TV (#6) Channel in 1995. Their start-up costs were $90K and they worked with Sammons Cable. Later they worked with Marcus and now they are with Charter. He explained how effective the station has been in communicating the city business to the public. Now they have hired a team headed by Torr Rolf Seemann, who is broadcast coordinator, and they are creating many new programs and videos to maintain a very full schedule. Costs have risen to the $365K level, but their surveys show it is a good buy. This was a very appropriate program at this time because of the start-up of our La Cañada City Web Site and the telecasting of our city council meetings to start soon.

NEW MEMBER: Nancy Valentine Avila is a realtor with Coldwell Banker; she and her husband, Andy, and two children are moving to La Cañada. Those attending recent meetings have noted a bit more verve in our patriotic singing, and small wonder, since Nancy majored in voice at Northwestern University, and has studied at both the Juilliard and Vienna Conservatories of Music. Prior to turning to real estate, she had a successful career as an opera singer in Europe. Hobbies are classical music, opera, gardening and hiking.

NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM: ROBERT TRANQUADA, former dean of the USC School of Medicine, will talk about: THE PATIENT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. 50-50 WINNER HOWARD BACKER. NEXT WEEK'S FLAG SALUTE: BILL SCHERKEY. INVOCATION: UNKNOWN or JIM REYNOLDS.
