The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Aug 2, 2000

Jack Dawson - Reporter
Jeanne Broberg, Editor

Opening: Meeting most appropriately commenced thanks to President Jim Reynolds along with Frank Williams leading us in the flag salute and Mel Wilson giving thanks for the day and our food. Can you believe the crowd sang "You’re a Grand Ole Flag " a cappella? (Hey with Ed Moulton leading, Kiwanis can do everything)

Guests: Dale Stencil, Joyce Flynn, Jean Scherkey, Don Graf, and Don Mazen (Quiz, match some of those as family members of our Kiwanis folks.)

Announcements:

Congratulations to Pres. Jim on receiving the Hixon award.

Great opportunity: Advertise in the Division Directory, deadline August 16th

Upcoming Programs:

August 16 Mr. Jack Atwood, Sports Chalet

August 23 "Apple For the Teacher"

August 30 Mike Antonovich, Supervisor 5th District, L.A. County

San Diego Convention You can still join in the fun

September 18th, Monday Meet Lt. Governor Vic Legerton at the Castaways

Celebrations, Happy/Bucks: Remember Pete Koontz, retired and left us for Santa Maria, his friend Able Maldonado was the Spanish Speaker at the Republican Convention. Howard Backer joined the Century Club for enjoying (or surviving) his European Trip even though he had a virus and a cold – got home to tell about it. John Kelly’s 60th anniversary (must be Dawson’s mistake, it must be Kelly’s birthday, he could not have gotten married when he was just 5 years old) Jim Ackland’s 52nd anniversary – (shall we buy that—or let him) Tom Gilfoy, Went to the Colorado River to teach his grandkids river safety, etc., he feel requiring knee surgery, then got a call from his wife – crutches and all had to go pick her up, and she now has had knee surgery. (Quiz: name Tom’s happy bucks, sad bucks). Carl Christensen FINALLY got a working saw. Frosty knows of a crab & starfish that lost their harp in a Sandabs Disco. (well, it was something like that)

Program: Kara Knock had everyone ‘Looking Up’, via the Griffith Park Observatory. It seems Colonel Griffith shot his wife but decided to do some good (that’s what Jack reported). He helped design the Palomar Telescope and left money to build the Griffith Observatory and also the Greek Theatre. (where did he get his money?). The Observatory is now undergoing major renovations. It will close in about a year for new internal and external construction. (probably eternal and celestial also) By the way, the average temperature on the sun is 27,000 degrees F. - (Sunscreen required)

Next week, August 9th Program: Mr. Jay Johnstone introducing the Los Angeles Dodgers 2000 Season, hey, come dressed baseball.

Flag Salute: Jack Dawson , Invocation: Rev. Jim Kniseley, Raffle Tickets: Daryal Gant (he won again), Sargent of Arms: Mark Mannarelli
