The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – July 25, 2001

"PREOPERATIVE PREPARATION": The talented Martha Crockett set the mood with her delightful classic and skillful piano renditions. Meanwhile, the early-bird Reception Committee Frank Williams, Chuck Gulick, Lou Roberts, Jim Reynolds et al was busy greeting the arrivals. For some reason, we started gastronomic satiation on time!, as well as the meeting.

President Jim Edwards asked Ed Moulton to lead a stimulating rendition of the, AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL (sans Nancy Valentine Avila!, followed by Jack Dawson leading the FLAG SALUTE JIM REYNOLDS then led us in a PRAYER which included our thought for Nancy Palermo and family.

GUESTS included CAROL CAPPS, Advisor for K-Kids, Hal's MARTHA CROCKETT, SANDY STENSTROM, and a relatively lively INTERCLUB WITH ED BIERDERMAN + THREE from WALNUT VALLEY KIWANIS CLUB.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: PAT ANDERSON, our vivacious President elect, reemphasized the sign up sheet for the SOSO SIZZLING SUMMER SOCIAL at the Sizzling Smiths on 04 August 01. Please be sure to note which contribution you will enjoy. The NANCY PALERMO SERVICE, a major and multifaceted member of our community, will be 4:30 p.m. Tomorrow at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church. Pete, we're with you! DICK DE GREY, finally returned from vacation, reminded us of the La Cañada COMMUNITY BAND CONCERT next Sunday in Memorial l Park, 6:00 p.m. BARRY RIEDEL is preparing a HISTORY OF THE TRAVEL-ADVENTURE SERIES. ANYONE WITH AN ANECDOTE, STORY OR RECOLLECTION OF THE SERIES DURING ITS 40-YEAR RUN, PLEASE CALL BARRY AT 818 790-2429.

HAPPY / SAD BUCKS: To the great interest, (delight?), ED BIEDERMAN, Walnut Kiwanis Club, was concerned about the not infrequent suggestions that their Club had "Sticky Fingers". In fact, the result of the discussion was that EACH GENTLEMAN CONTRIBUTED ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! Let's get them back!!! HAROLD ARMAN vocalized that he had not enjoyed a "Happy Birthday Song" from us, like the A.M.Club did for him. It was felt that 84 years was worth it, so we did it!. AL RESTIVO was grateful for the City Approval of the St. Bede Project. ED MOULTON noted that Bob Slattery will be returning home next Friday. PAT ANDERSON was delighted that her daughter was moving currently into a home within walking distance. JACK DAWSON noted tickets for the Pasadena Symphony. The Diamond Bar Key Club won many prizes at the Convention.

PROGRAM: JERRY HEALEY led into the message by introducing the Beautiful Carol Capps, and the ONE MILLION PULL TABS. presented to the RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE. These are sold for the aluminum therein, (more in the pull tab than the rest of the can!) as a fund raiser. MANAGER MIKE ELIAS followed with a great tape of the activities, some of the 32 family accommodations. While these desperately ill children from all over the world are receiving heart, heart-lung transplants, cancer therapy and the other critical care in which this Hospital has achieved world wide acclaim, their family units remain intact with siblings and parents a block away at all times! And this is only one of 209 Ronald Mc Donald houses world wide. So, save your pull tabs!

DRAWING WON BY MEL WILSON.

NEXT WEEK: Richard Roche, Telecommunications. Pledge led by Nancy Valentine Avila; Prayer by Chuck Gulick.
