The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – July 18, 2001 OPENING: The Honorable President Jim Edwards, opened the meeting by thanking Martha Crockett for the fine piano playing. Ed Moulton and Martha teamed up for a great AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL. CAPTAIN Hal Thomas lead the Pledge followed by Barry Riedel doing the Invoking. With OLD GLORY, and GOD properly taken of, the meeting started. SPECIAL HONORARY MEMBERSHIP: Bill Abellmann was presented Honorary Member to the club at the last Board meeting and Ed Moulton, along with the Lt. Governor, thanked Bill for his fifty years as a Kiwanian. Bill was joined by his wife Theo. GUESTS: Beside the talented Martha Crockett, we met the new Postmaster, Ann Doneen’s business partner, and the new Lt. Governor. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Glen Pettit opened with Habitat for Humanity Picnic this Sat. Nite at Memorial Park, it is only five Dollars and will help build a home. SAT. 7-21-01 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Lt. Governor Vic announced that 8-1-01 will be Kiwanis Day at Doger stadium. Pat Flynn wanted everyone to put money in the buckets on the tables. Frosty Boyd said Bob Slattery is doing well and is up walking. Lou Roberts said he’s back, but needs some of the iron in his elbow removed. Joel Smith warned all members about the current I.D. stealing going on. He suggested that you have a locking mailbox and to contact him for details. The Honorable President Elect Pat Anderson passed out the sign up sheet for the SO SO SIZZLING SUMMER SOCIAL at the SMITH’S that will be 8-4-01. She sassily announced with great glee that the CLUB has once again completed a SUPER ROUND ROBIN. And I might mention that it was done 74 days faster than last year. She ended with saying that the club will be going to see OKLAHOMA on the 26th of this month and to call Ed Moulton 790-2111 if you can go. HAPPY, SAD, AND FINE BUCKS: We had three Birthday’s, each celebrated with century clubs, Elizabeth Georgeon, Joel Smith and Hal Crockett. Harold Backer was glad to comb his hair, Paul Westmoreland was happy about dancing in Arizona, Sheila Cook happy and sad about kids cars, and Harold Arman gave a buck, but you must be here next week to learn why. PROGRAM: Ann Doneen introduced John Sack. John told us about his upcoming book on the “Big Circle or the Chinese Mafia” as it is called. He introduced us to the key figures, colorful names like Chicken Head, Fatty, The Professor, Tiger, and Dragonhead, which is the name of this book. It did not sound like we would be inviting any of these folks to join the club; although it sounds like they can raise money.
