The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – July 12, 2000 Ed Moulton, Guest Editor OPENING President Jim Reynolds was back in charge after one week at the National Convention and one week personal time. We opened with "God Bless America"; Tom Stafford led the pledge, and Jay Rabadi gave the invocation. Guests included Blanche Barrett, Martha Crockett; Key Clubbers Eleanor Chan and Nancy Dutton, Kiwanis Relations Chair. NEW MEMBERS Membership Chair, Sheila Cook officiated at the induction of our new members: Mark Manarelli, a Certified Investment Planner sponsored by Al Restivo; and Paul Westmoreland, a JPL Retiree sponsored by Daryal Gant. ANNOUNCEMENTS Tom Smith announced that Glen Pettit’s wife Caryl was in the hospital recuperating from an operation. Sheila Cook said that Mike Stokes is also successfully recovering from major surgery. Prez Jim reminded us of the District Convention in San Diego August 17-20 at the Town & Country Hotel. Registration paid by the club. Highly recommended for new members to get the bigger picture of Kiwanis, and for upcoming officers, directors, and committee chairs. THE THEATRE PARTY Matt Regan reminded us of the theatre party, 8:00 p.m. Friday July 21. "Pajama Game" at the La Cañada High School—preceded by hot dogs, hamburgers, and trimmins’ at the Moultons (Vista del Valle at Haskell) starting at 6:00. The show, a sample of which was given us last week, is presented by the Foothill Summer Theatre. Directed by Marlys Marsteller, this group always does a great job and warrants our support in person and financially. A block of $12 seats is reserved for our club. The sign-up sheet, having been waylaid, a telephone follow-up will be made. Please be ready to respond. THE PROGRAM We were delightfully entertained by the Palpitating Panthers of Palm Crest—those limitless bundles of energy, the talented toe-tappers, the Jumpin’ Jills, the bouncing beauties! Handicapped by a carpeted floor, they were still terrific! (Ah, youth! What a shame to waste it on the young!) Under direction of Janice Fuhrman, they well-deserved the contribution from the Youth Services committee Chair, Anthony Portantino. NEXT WEEK July 9: "Tails" of the Los Angeles Zoo. Speaker: Lelani Chu. • Pledger: Paul Westmoreland • Invoker: Al Restivo • Raffler: Doris Horwith • Fine Buckanear: Mark Mannarelli MEMO - The International Soap Box Derby is Saturday, July 22. "Check local listings" and cheer for our champs!
