The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – June 21, 2000

Jeanne Broberg, Editor

Opening: We were all seeing red today, President Reynolds was red today, was he ever, and can only be seen so bedecked on Tournament of Roses Royalty Day and Scout Day (that’s appropriate). Mike Stokes’ favorite musician, Shirley DeGrey (now was that Shirley or Scott Joplin?) played in style befitting the day. Ed Moulton knew that all those boys in uniform deserved a rousing rendition of our National Anthem, followed by Jack Dawson leading the flag salute. As he invoked, Anthony Portantino reminded us that "Life is Good." He even got to bite his 8-year-old’s nose this morning. (what???) In his prayer he asked for God’s help in letting the sense of comradery felt in Kiwanis filter out into the community. (Amen to that)

Announcements: The Jack Hastings Gazebo roof is up, thanks to Carl Christensen and crew, but there is lots still to be done. Call Carl. A LCHS and a Flintridge Prep senior each received a La Cañada Kiwanis Club scholarship. We’ve collected 2 tons plus of newspapers for the Glendale Handicapped kids.

Happy Bucks: George Lutes-23rd anniversary, Bob Martin told us all to read Flags of Our Fathers about those who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. Spielberg was filming in Descanso today.

Guests: Martha Crockett, with Hal of course, David Wilcox with Al Restivo, Bill Ryborn with Ed Moulton, Lorne Person, Jr. & Sr. from Glendale Kiwanis, David Tate from BSA, and Scout parents.

Monday June 26th, 7:00 p.m. Board meeting, Verdugo Hills Hospital, Jim Edwards presiding (hey, as long as it is some "Jim")

July 5 – Super Interclub at La Crescenta High School with the La Crescenta Tech Club, 6:00 p.m. See Jim Edwards

Aug 17-20 Cal-Nev-Ha Convention in San Diego, So far it’s DeGreys and Orrs, Join them.

DO IT Earn a District Kiwanis award by bringing guests or new members

THE PASADENA POPS ORCHESTRA: Attend a concert at Descanso Gardens and become as enthusiastic as Music Director Rachael Worby, guest of Mayor Dave. First concert Saturday, July 1st 7:30 p.m., "We the People"

SOAP BOX DERBY FOLKS: The Imhoff family and the Kent family joined us. You all know of Jerry Healey’s talents, but it was Erin Imhoff’s expert coaxing that made Jerry look so knowledgeable. Ed Kent ran the assembly clinics, joined by Theron Price, visiting today in his Eagle Scout capacity.

K KIDS Carol Capps, Palm Crest teacher, is the K Kids faculty advisor. Honored were Sherry Jung, accompanied by dad Larry; Caitlin Clerkin, accompanied by mom Chiao; Jesse D’Conti with mom Juliette; Matia McPherson with cousin Kyoko Nakano. Why, we were even on an environmental theme today. Under Carol Capps leadership, 160,000 pull tabs (some 2 miles and 4081 feet worth) were collected by Palm Crest students and today, before our very eyes, presented to Mike Elias for the Ronald McDonald House for critically ill children.

Look at the service to the community and the fine Scouts. What boys they are, what men they will become. The above represents about half the Eagles for this year!!!! Page Whyte, Scouter with the San Gabriel Valley Council represented 5 Eagles from Troop 509 and lightheartedly teased the Verdugo Hills Council Scout Executive Andrew Messer, guest of Phil Hammons. Also recognized were Lauren Frances, Lorene Moses, and Janet Ma who have earned the Girl Scout Golden award this year. Altogether fitting and proper that Mat Barker, 2nd Class Scout Troop 507, guest of Aunt Pat Anderson, won the raffle (and it wasn’t rigged). Pat had never won in her life, but she lent $1 dollar to Mat and look what happened, tells you something about the next generation. Thanks to Anthony Portantino and Kenneth Lowe for this very apropos program.

All this and still time for a Frosty joke, something about cough medicine.
