The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – June 14, 2000
Flag Day

Jack Dawson, Reporter
Jeanne Broberg, Editor

Opening: This time Inez Pickering chose Shubert – opening the meeting in true classic fashion. Mr. Music Moulton led us in "You’re a Grand Old Flag" – Flag Day, of course. Jack Orr’s invocation was seasonally appropriate with Father’s Day quotations including some from Douglas MacArthur.

Guests: Marie Sorensa, Asta Smith and Don Bolger joined us from Hollywood Los Feliz . Glad to have Mark Mannarelli with us again.

Honors: Harold Arman was recognized with the Legion of Honor for being in Kiwanis 45 years. (you are probably curious, for the record, Ed Moulton has 48 years and Gordon Sherer 52 years) Who will be the first to be a centurion Kiwaniian?

You are welcome: Descanso wrote us a thank you note for donations to the rosarium. Descanso now has a program for children to learn about plants and the garden.

Celebrations, Happy/ (NO Sad) Bucks – Happy Birthday to Tom Stafford, it all began in 1916 in Lenore Idaho, "born a farmer" (Editor’s note, "born a farmer", I feel sorry for his Mom, ouch!!!!); Frosty told about a not too smart young woman who mixed 6 cups of coffee (ask him); Dennis Croxen bragged about the YMCA inventing Father’s Day; Daryal does not recommend cooking in a kayak; Mayor Dave thanked us for publicity, good and bad.

Program Notes (thanks to Jack Dawson, our friendly reporter of the day)- Doug Smith of the Los Angeles Times brought all up to date on LA Unified School District. (La Cañada Unified School District has 4327 students) LA Unif. Has 700,000+ students, from San Pedro to San Fernando. The LA Unif schools vary from shabby to very dilapidated. Money is the excuse but not the main problem. The problem is, not a lot of bad people, but a lot of good people with no direction and trying to operate a bad system.

In the past racial politics have isolated board members and made them untouchable. Mayor Reardon forced some changes in the board. Ramon Cortimes headed the district in the right direction as interim superintendent. He divided the district into 11 semi-autonomous areas.

Roy Romer, as new Superintendent, brings great political skills. One immediate problem is to locate land and build new schools There is a lot of loss of confidence from the Belmont fiasco.

Next week, June 21st: Bring appropriate guests for Scout (Girl & Boy) Recognition Day. Pledge of Allegiance Jack Dawson; Invocation Anthony Portantino ; Sgt. At Arms: Ann Doneen; Raffle This week’s winner
