The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – June 7, 2000 Jeanne Broberg, Editor Opening: Of course, Inez Pickering’s music was a delightful way to begin lunch on such a beautiful day. We all joined Ed Moulton, with reverence for our country in singing the Star Spangled Banner followed by Jack Orr leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Before giving the invocation Jim Ackland reminded us all to appreciate Tom Gilfoy’s generosity in enhancing already beautiful Descanso with the new planter. Jim’s invocation quoted Isaiah’s proclamation that we can be renewed by having the strength of the Lord with us and that we sometimes need to wait on the Lord, as we are always asking the Lord to be patient with us. Guests: Mel Wilson’s wife and Hal Crockett’s wife added spark to the room. Ken Lowe brought a new young dentist in town, Mark Page a product of La Cañada and now of USC. Let’s hope he’s soon to be a member. Al Restivo announced that his guest, Mark Mannarelli, will be joining the club. Hurrah! Tom Gilfoy introduced Bob Cheesewright of the Board of Trustees of Descanso. Vic Legerton, Lt. Governor designate, joined us and LCUSD Superintendent Lorie Gonia brought John Moldafsky, Palm Crest parent who is Superintendent for the Day. We "Hi Neighbored" all these folks and then sang "Daisy, Daisy"—Davey’s proposal on his bicycle built for two, and….Daisy’s response. Pat Flynn shared 3 Terrific Kids with us: Carly Upton with parents Mike and Kim Upton, Eric Scott with mom Deborah and Allison Terry with mom Andrea. Installation: Phil Hammons has brought in Ann Doneen as our newest Kawanian. She brings much professional public relations expertise! Announcements: Thanks to Matt Regan’s gathering, 36 attended the Governor’ visit Sunday. August 17-20 will be the CalNevHa convention, see Sharon Orr for details. Ask Jim Reynolds about the Sheriff Youth Activities League, which is sponsoring "Comedy Galore" at the Ice House to benefit East Los Angeles children. The City sponsored La Cañada Flintridge Youth Council car entered in the Soap Box derby is on display the City Hall. According to Anthony, the car didn’t win, but the wheels came in 3rd place. Daryal Gant read letters of appreciation from 9 year old Emily Kent and her sister, 12 year old Melissa Kent who will be taking their Soap Box Derby cars on to Akron. Melissa wrote, "thank you very much, it was SOOOOOOOO FUN, she is so happy to represent us in Akron, this is the very most important race in her whole life." Sister Emily also wrote thanking us "SOOOOOOOO much". We fulfilled her dream, to have a race in her own hometown. Meghan Serwin son’s 4th anniversary since his transplant is a VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. Program: Tom Gilfoy introduced Gonzalo Mendoza, Counsel General of Chili representing his country at the Chilean Embassy of Los Angeles in Century City. Tom very carefully measured with a string on his own home world globe and found, by his string, that the coastline of Chili is equal in length to the distance from Tijuana Northward clear into the Arctic. (Now is a string an attorney’s tool for measuring?) Tom also, sincerely scientifically, studied the Country as he traversed it on his bike. More scientifically, Gonzalo knows that the Chilean coastline is 2700 miles long equaling the distance from San Francisco to New York. In his perfect English and delightful Chilean accent, Gonzalo shared with us Chili from their flamingos, to their copper mines, the first in the world to produce copper, and their fruits, imported here for when you need an item "contra season". Chili was the 2nd country in the world to export salmon. Tourism (come on down), and scientific research are other Chilean industries. It’s a youthful country, with 50 million people, the average age is 25 years (now how do they do that?) Chili was the first country in Latin American to open its markets to the world. There are 10 nonstop flights from LAX/Santiago each week – go there. Next week: June 14: Doug Smith, product of LAUnified, will share an update on the L. A. Schools and their new Superintendent, Roy Romer. Pledge of Allegiance Daryal Gant; Invocation Jack Orr; Sgt. At Arms: Ann Doneen; Raffle: This week’s winner; Bulletin: Notes will be taken by Jack Dawson (be nice to him) to be typed by yours truly. June 21st Program: Plan now to bring appropriate guests for Scout (Girls & Boys) Recognition Day.
