The La Kawañian La Cañada, CA – May 3, 2000 Doris Horwith, Editor THE OPENING President Jim Reynolds opened the program with his usual enthusiasm, thanking Shirley DeGrey for her tuneful renditions. She can play ragtime better than anyone and without music too. The group seemed wired today to get on with the prepared program... guess what it was about... THE SOAP BOX DERBY. GUESTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Visiting today were Paul Westmoreland, a friend of Daryal Gant from JPL; Sue Leabo from the LCUSD accompanying Jeanne Broberg; Sharon Benoit, and former member Em Watts. Both he and the other guest, Sharon Benoit seemed to have lots of experience with soap box derbies. A joint Prayer Breakfast meeting was announced for May 19 at the YMCA. The speaker will be former publisher of the L.A. Times, Mark Willes, an LCF resident. Reservations are being taken Dick DeGrey read a letter of thanks from La Cañadan of the Year recipient, Wes Seastrom, a very active person in this community. This is always a very popular annual event. The Les Tupper Awards were also announced for May 8 at Von Karman Auditorium, JPL at 7:00 pm and one of the honorees is our own Eileen Ferber. She can be seen at every event in town, both as a participant and also covering the story for The Outlook. Also being recognized are Capt John Harris and his firefighters from from Station 82 who so successfully fought the recent Flintridge fire. They averted a real tragedy. Latest Century Club member is Tom Sleeman who celebrated his birthday today. Also celebrating was Elizabeth Georgeon who was counting eight years of wedded bliss. THE PROGRAM Chairmen of the various committees for the Soap Box Derby event all presented their plans and efforts toward making it a huge success. Sharon Benoit, coordinator and PR person updated us on the publicity it is generating. The date for this first time activity in LCF is May 27-28 They expect 50-60 enrollees in the race. Among the very many activities happening is the establishment of a display and manned information site at Paul Bobzin's Bridgestone dealership. A real "Soap Box" car is on display there.
