The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – April 19, 2000 Eileen Ferber, Editor OPENING Inez Pickering played with a "spring" in the keyboard and Ed Moulton led us in "America the Beautiful." President Jim Reynolds led the invocation, followed by Sheila Cook leading us in the Pledge to the Flag. GUESTS Beginning with our LCHS Key Club, Ken Lowe had members go to the podium to display several of the many awards they won at the recent youth conference. It sounded like, if there was an award category, the Key Clubbers won it. Congrats to them – they make us all very proud. Phil Hammons brought wife Harriet; Tom Slaughter introduced his friend and prospective member, Bill Bodell. Eileen Ferber introduced her "shadow" for the day, Lauren Guza, a junior at LCHS, who was participating in a job- shadowing program, learning the newspaper business. Pat Flynn had the most guests – Terrific Kids from Palm Crest School. Sorry, a complete list of the names was unavailable after editor made several calls to obtain them. SPECIAL EVENTS Sheila Cook installed Sharon Collins, executive vice president of Verdugo Hills Hospital. Her sponsor is Phil Hammons. Ed Moulton had the honor of installing Lillian Masters as an honorary member. It is an honor bestowed on the widows of former members. Joe Masters was a 20-year Kiwanian and former treasurer. Bill Scherkey and Melinda Thompson detailed the IDD program we support. Kiwanis is working with Unicef to stop mental retardation due to iodine deficiency disease. Club members who donated a minimum of $25 each at the request of our Lt. Gov. Norm Allen received recognition. They included: Ed Moulton, Tom Stafford, Tom Smith, Daryal Gant, Sharin Orr, Bob Slattery, Joel Smith, Jim Ackland, Jim Reynolds, Bill Pickering and Howard Backer. Howard Backer announced enough money has been collected to get a Hixon Award in Joe Masters’ honor. ANNOUNCEMENTS Matt Regan encouraged everyone to sign up for the District 1 Governor’s Visit on June 4. It’s at the Autrey Western Museum from 4-9 p.m. Cost is $32 and includes dinner. Dick DeGrey reminded all that next Wednesday is our La Cañadan of the Year luncheon, honoring Wes Seastrom. Mayor Dave Spence will be the MC. Dick sent around a sign up sheet – if you haven’t made a reservation by now, you need to call him at 790-4530. Joan Peters had three announcements: (1) Be sure to sign in next week at the luncheon – because of the crowd, people often forget. (2) The Flintridge Prep Key Club raised $5,000 at its walk for Multiple Sclerosis – three times more than ever before! She presented the Prez with a tee-shirt from the walk, noting we should be proud of him, since he walked for MS. (3) She told a Frosty joke about a receding "hare" line, but she was not fined for it. Bill Scherkey announced a meeting for nominations for 2000-2001 officers on May 3, 11 a.m. Past presidents are invited to attend the meeting to select new people. Mayor pro-tem Anthony Portantino reminded everyone to put money in the Childrens Hospital buckets. President Reynolds recognized Mayor Dave Spence, elected with Portantino on Monday. Before the new mayor joined the century club, he noted what an honor it is to be from LCF. "When I go out to other areas and see how well our city is thought of, and how well our club is thought of, it makes me proud to be a member of both." Spence introduced Portantino, who said, since he is only mayor pro-tem, he’ll join the half-century club. Phil Hammons joined the century club – because Earth Day and his birthday are the same date and for his anniversary coming up in June. Howard Backer offered multiple happy bucks for Melinda Thompson returning and that tax season is over. The Prez reminded everyone of the board meeting on Monday and that reports need to be in by then. PROGRAM Matt Regan introduced our speaker, Dr. Paul Anding, who gave us a "bone chilling" look at our bodies and how we need better nutrition, exercise and a good chiropractor to stay healthy. NEXT WEEK Invocation: Rev. Phil Anderson Sgt. At Arms: Mike Stokes Flag Salute: Anthony Portantino Raffle: Dick DeGrey
