The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – April 12, 2000 Doris Horwith, Editor THE OPENING The opening today was ably handled by Jim Edwards, filling in for Jim Reynolds who was out launching a submarine in the desert somewhere. He also chaired the meeting. He was not as kind to the folks as Jim Reynolds usually is. He was slinging fines all over the place....to Dave Spence who voted wrong at the City Council meeting....to Glen Pettit who was wearing dark glasses.... to Jerry Healey who was eating too slowly.…to Frosty Boyd for the jokes he’s been telling all year and for the ones he hasn’t told yet. Daryal Gant was the sergeant-at-arms. GUESTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Guests today were Martha Crockett with Hal; Paul Westmoreland of JPL with Daryal Gant; Key Clubbers Christine Chang and Jingmai O’Connor with Ken Lowe; Meghan Serwin’s son, Jordan; and Bill Bodel with Tom Slaughter. Dick DeGrey needs signatures for a head count on the "La Cañadan of the Year" luncheon on April 26. He also needs help with the details of the event as well as a list of guests. Tom Slaughter says details of the Soap Box Derby are available on the Website. Glen Pettit wanted to announce the Prayer Breakfast but was a little confused as to the date. I think it ended up to be May 19. If that’s wrong, check with him, he got fined for not being sure. Hal Arman joined the Century Club for his 58th anniversary. Jerry Healey just got back from London and Ireland where he found his relatives; and this editor, Doris Horwith, also found some cousins, last seen in Egypt in 1945, now in Sydney, Australia. Good feeling! THE PROGRAM Pat Anderson introduced our own Meghan Serwin who gave a combination craft talk about her background and education growing up in LCF and going to local schools followed by law school at Berkley. The main thrust of her talk was about her first son who developed childhood leukemia or A.L.L. Their efforts to treat him and the use of umbilical cord therapy for bone marrow replacement by the California Cryobank organization made for a very interesting and touching talk. NEXT WEEK’S TALK - Dr. Paul Anding, Chiropractor, on the subject of our bones and nutrition. Flag Salute - Sheila Cook Invocation - Jim Kniseley Raffle - Ed Moulton
