The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – April 5, 2000 Eileen Ferber, Editor OPENING Inez Pickering tickled all as she tickled those ivories with lively tunes. We were happy to have song leader Ed Moulton back as he got us back in tune with "This is My Country." Ed was away because he was "forced" to go on a cruise with the love of his life, Connie, and nine members of his family. Joan Peters announced our guests, including Sharon Benoit (guest of Ed Moulton) and two friends from Glendale. Phil Hammons had the most guests, with wife Harriet, son John and John’s best friend Jacob. MEMBERSHIP Sheila Cook had the pleasure of inducting our newest inductee, Mike Stokes; (she’s his sponsor). Everyone knows Capt. Mike from Fire Station 19 in LCF. He said, "It means so much to become a member of this club. I’ve been a firefighter for 30 years; 19 of them in La Cañada." While Capt. Mike is on duty elsewhere now, he will be back in LCF within about nine months. We sure do want him back and Daryal Gant is happiest of all to have him in the club. Stokes will now be our Sgt. at Arms; a position Gant has held for four long (but profitable) months! FINALLY, Matt Regan and Daryal Gant got their badges. Both of these guys have jumped in to get "hands-on" experience with Kiwanis. Regan heads up our social activities and does a terrific job. Gant is assistant Soap Box Derby director, helping with a brand new club project. ANNOUNCEMENTS President Reynolds gave details about the Soap Box Derby, called the "Millennium Project." He explained that we needed a new project to raise funds since the Travel Adventure series’ attendance has dropped over the past several years. WE WILL CONTINUE THE SERIES, but are adding a new project to add to our coffers. The Prez told us "The Soap Box Derby needs a total commitment from all of you." SEE SPECIAL INSERT FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT AND OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE DERBY. Following the Prez, there was little left for Derby Director Ed Moulton to tell us, except to look at the list of assignments and to stress that it will take ALL of us to pull this off successfully. The Derby Committee will be meeting every Thurs. at 7:30 p.m. at the Crescenta-Canada YMCA, except for Holy Week, when it will meet on Wed. – Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings. Ed introduced Sharon Benoit, who will be promoting the event for us. She told us, "Every kid should have a dream and I believe you have an opportunity to do that." The Prez announced that Elizabeth Georgeon has been named the Chair of the Real Property Section of the L.A. County Bar Association. She has 1700 attorneys working with her! We were happy to hear that Pete Palermo’s wife, Nancy, is recovering nicely at home, following surgery. BUCKS -- (some big ones this time) President Reynolds announced birthdays and anniversaries and some folks came up with impressive amounts. Jack Dawson (birthday) Daryal Gant and Matt Regan (permanent badges), Joel Smith (anniversary—to go toward the Joe Masters Hixon), Elizabeth Georgeon (hefty new honor), and Jim Reynolds all joined the Century Club. We accepted donations from George Lutes and Tom Smith and Mike Stokes (birthdays); Ed Moulton (cruise); Frosty Boyd (for one of his ‘better’ jokes). PROGRAM Al Restivo introduced Sister Terry Dodge, who spoke about her prison ministry for women. Sister Terry was a teacher at St. Bede, so she felt like she was "coming home" to talk to us in LCF. She gave an impassioned talk about "Crossroads," an organization that helps women who are released from prison so they do not fall back into what she said is a system that sets them up for failure. Crossroads provides a much needed second change to help the women get back on their feet, find jobs – and 80 percent of those women never return to crime. Now, that’s a "record" to be proud of! NEXT WEEK The Prez will be trying to launch a submarine in Laughlin, so Jim Edwards will fill that post. Our program is Dr. Paul Anding, who will talk about nutrition and bones (ours, of course). Raffle: Joel Smith Sgt. At Arms: Mike Stokes Invocation: Hal Crockett Flag Salute: Hal Thomas
