The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – March 8, 2000 Meghan Serwin, Editor Did yesterday’s primary election lead Ed Moulton to choose "America the Beautiful" as our opening song? I ask because it seemed thematically in synch with Shirley DeGrey’s spirited piano rendition of "Happy Days Are Here Again." Your faithful editor led the Pledge of Allegiance and Anthony Portantino based his invocation on one of my favorite poems, William Carlos Williams’ "The Red Wheelbarrow." Guests included prospective new member Mike Stokes; LCHS Key Club President David Zhao; and Flintridge Prep Key Clubbers Heidi Heckendorf, Evette Ferkassian and Sandra Yum. Key Club announcements came from David Zhao, who reported that his club’s dance last Friday was a big success and "made lots of money," and Flintridge Prep Key Club President Heidi Heckendorf, who told us about that club’s March 25 Walk for M.S. The Prep Key Clubbers hope to raise over $12,000 with their event, and need our help both as sponsored walkers and as walkers’ sponsors. (Say that three times, fast, and try not to lisp.) Phil Hammons is collecting sign-ups. The Craft Talk standard was raised a notch or two by "old new" member Bob Martin, who told us about his boyhood in Louisiana, his wartime experiences, and the reasons he became a teacher. A hard act to follow . . . . Special recognition went to Bob Slattery, who received the George S. Hickson Fellowship for his exceptional contributions to the Kiwanis International Foundation’s IDD fund. LCF Mayor (and winner of the Democratic primary for the 44th Assembly District - !!) presented Bob with his award. Speaking for the club, Jim Reynolds said, "that's our eighth Hickson, and we’re proud of that." Joel Smith, hoping for a ninth, pledged $100 to start fundraising to get our late member Joe Masters a Hickson of his own (and later contributed his raffle winnings to the same fund). Happy/Sad Bucks came from Frosty Boyd, who told a joke about a mother who uses her son to rid her home of unwanted guests (ask Webmaster Tom Slaughter how to share your own bad – but clean! -- jokes through the new Frosty Boyd Joke Page on our web site; Carol Liu, who joined the Century Club to celebrate her primary win (as Anthony Portantino put it, "She kicked butt!"); Joan Peters, whose guest, Prep Key Club President Heidi Heckendorf cast her first-ever ballot yesterday; Bob Martin, who gave $75 in honor of his 74th birthday but demanded a volume discount in years to come; Patsy Christianson, who just became a mother-in-law again and gave one happy buck because that’s all she has left; and Pat Anderson, who gave a sad buck for coming home from vacation to find she needs a new roof. Announcements were led by Pat Anderson, who collected sign-ups for the trip to Heritage Square that will follow Tom Sleeman’s presentation on that subject next week. Pat also announced that actor Robert Forster ("Alligator," "The Black Hole") will give an inspirational program on March 29. Dick DeGrey announced our annual La Cañadan of the Year luncheon on April 26. Ed Moulton reminded us to turn out en masse for the inaugural meeting of his Soap Box Derby Committee at 9 a.m. this Sat., March 11, at the YMCA, and also asked that we all sign up for Vons’ eScrip, a completely painless way to raise money for Kiwanis programs while buying your groceries. Call Ed for details. The touching and inspiring program was presented by Tom Monje of the Children’s Miracle Network, whose fundraising efforts (remember those buckets on our tables?) help sick kids get well at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Next Week: Joel Smith will sell raffle tickets AND provide the invocation; Tom Slaughter will lead the flag salute; and Daryal Gant will continue as Sergeant-at-Arms. Tom Sleeman’s program about Heritage Square will be followed by a field trip for those lucky folks who have signed up to attend.
