The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – March 29, 2000

Meghan Serwin, Editor

The theme was movies, in keeping with last Sunday’s Oscar show and with the profession of our celebrity guest. Inez Pickering played a selection of movie tunes (I recognized the theme from Titanic and the old standard Surrey with the Fringe on Top, which I’m sure I heard Shirley Jones sing in some classic movie musical). Jack Dawson conducted Columbia the Gem of the Ocean (an anthem to Columbia Pictures?). Tom Slaughter led the flag salute (I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone say the Pledge of Allegiance in movies – why is that?), while Frank Williams provided an invocation that would have made Bing Crosby’s Going My Way character proud.

Non-celebrity guests included Mary Gant with husband Daryal; Key Clubbers Chris Lee and Richard Lee; and La Cañada Elementary School Terrific Kids Vanessa Manning (with mom Rikki, dad Terry, and grandparents Don and Rose Manning) and Daniel Clark (with parents Kevin and Susan).

Board announcements from Jim Reynolds included a report on yesterday’s groundbreaking for the Jack Hastings Memorial Gazebo and an announcement that Mike Stokes is our newest member. Sheila Cook announced that Diane DellaValle donated a kidney to a friend on Monday, and all went very well. Carl Christensen said that the plans for the Jack Hastings Gazebo have to go back to the Planning Commission for further approvals, but once that process ends work will begin in earnest (and hopefully end in May). Matt Regan announced that our planned Dinner/Theater social has been postponed to June or July, and further told us to save June 4 for a dinner program at the Gene Autry Museum with the District Governor. Anthony Portantino gave further kudos to Harold Arman, who was elected Older American of the Year by a rare 5-0 vote of the City Council. Harold Arman, in turn, announced the selection of our own Eileen Ferber as the individual winner of this year’s Les Tupper Awards. Daryal Gant announced that the Soap Box Derby committee will meet at Jim Reynolds’ house tomorrow, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. Dick DeGrey reminded us of the April 26 luncheon to honor La Cañadan of the Year Wes Seastrom, as well as our May 10 program honoring Fire Chief John Harris. Pat Flynn said he’s looking for Foothill Boulevard office space for the Soap Box Derby.

Happy Bucks came from Frosty Boyd, who told a joke about a wiggly baby statesman; Key Clubber Chris Lee, who’s happy for all the unforgettable lessons he’s learned through Key Club; Anthony Portantino, who honored Jerry Fulwood for the help he gave Margaret Pankratz in navigating the red tape associated with getting the Gazebo approved and funded; Daryal Gant, who was thrilled that his wife had time to have lunch with him; Mel Wilson, who’s happy that the jokes on the internet are getting better; Howard Backer, who gave his last two bucks in honor of his granddaughter’s recent wedding; Pat Anderson, whose husband, Philip, gave a successful presentation at La Cañada Presbyterian Church last night; and Dick DeGrey, whose golf foursome all came in under 100 last week (much discussion ensued as to whether that was 100 years old, 100 degrees, or 100 strokes).

The fun, informative and inspirational program was presented by actor Robert Forster, who spoke about his 35-year career in movies and theater and also gave some excellent advice about how to win the game in the final inning.

Next Week: Bob Wallace will sell raffle tickets; Mel Wilson will lead the flag salute; Bill Pickering will do the invocation; and Daryal Gant will continue as Sergeant-at-Arms pending induction of new member Mike Stokes.

Quote for the week: You can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a firefly and still have room enough for three caraway seeds and a producer's heart.

-- Fred Allen (1894-1956)
