The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – March 27, 2002 Deborah Orlik, Editor OPENING: Shirley DeGrey at the piano today. There was a great deal of talk at Table 8 about whether that song is called "Down in the Valley" or "Hear the Wind Blow" or "Down in the Valley, Hear the Wind Blow." Maybe Shirley can tell us next week. Flag salute was Nancy Avila. Invocation by Barry Riedel. HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS: At the head table today were Nancy and Barry with Prez Pat. Visitors today were Key Club Members Kate Barry and Jessica Hummel (whose dad is an AM Kiwanian!) (guests of Ken Lowe). Technically speaking, Shirley DeGrey and yours truly are also guests. Jeanne Mills was there as a guest of the absent Tom Slaughter. The beautiful and mostly-quiet Isabella Rose was there with her dad, Anthony Portantino. ANNOUNCEMENTS: We all welcomed Bob Slattery back. Good to see you, Bob! April 6th is the last Kiwanis Travel Adventure. We're going to the Scottish Isles. Daryal Gant told us about the Soap Box Derby which will be held this year on the Saturday of Fiesta Days. The Race Management people are looking for volunteers for "crowd safety" and "drivers" (folks to move the cars from the bottom of the hill back up to the top). Also needed: pick-ups and drivers on Monday after the race to return the hay bales to the Academy. See Daryal. Dick DeGrey suggested we either need volunteers for the hamburger booth that same day or we need to not do the hamburger booth because both are labor intensive. Don't forget about April 24th at 11:45am for "La Canadian of the Year" luncheon. If you're looking to sign the initiative to get sound walls funded here in LCF, check outside most of the markets. The Standard Form Kiwanis Club Bylaws were on the table. Prez Pat said there will be a quiz on pages 19 and 20 at the next meeting…Eeek! Looking forward to our "dining out" at Divina Cucina to support the new library and the Soap Box Derby. Did she say it's called "Books, Brakes & Bruschetta?" HAPPY, SAD AND OTHER BUCKS: Richard Schulhof announced that, thanks to Jack Dawson, Descanso Gardens will be getting a new pump for its fish pond...and check out the lilac grove which is in full bloom. Don't wait on that last one. PROGRAM: Thank you to new members Clyde Hemphill and Skye Sprowles for giving extemporaneous Craft Talks today. Clyde told us that he was born in New Jersey (whereupon one person applauded). He spent most of his career as an "uncivil engineer" working for Martin-Murietta (now Lockheed Martin) with JPL on some of its big projects, including the Viking missions to Mars. He is also known in town for his work on the Gladiator Board of Directors and for being part of the team that resuscitated the Spartan Booster Club. He can't exactly remember when he retired, but it was sometime in the mid 1990's and he now spends most of his time hanging around the house driving his wife crazy, gardening and cleaning the pool. Skye, as you know, is the Executive Director of the La Cañada Chamber of Commerce and Community Association. He was born in Chicago, a perfect background for the many years he spent as a radio DJ for country western stations. He reminisced about going from little stations in the small southwest towns to the radio giant KEZY in Orange County. When he made the switch to television news, of course, he had to start out in those small towns again. He told a wonderful story about interviewing George W. Bush years ago when the TV camera broke. Sorry you missed that one. From CNN and Channels 5, 9 and 13, he went to work as the media relations guy for the city attorney (who should probably remain unnamed...), then to the Los Angeles Dept. of Children and Family Services in public relations and then, WOW, after all those years all over the country, now he gets to walk to work! Again, Skye and Clyde, thanks for stepping up to the plate. Next Week: Jim Ackland will be presenting the program on the Pasadena Historical Museum with Delores Walker as speaker. Dr. Allan Perry Jr. will give the flag salute and the invocation will be given by Dick DeGrey. Future Programs: 4-10-02 The LCF L.A. County Library Members: Remember to wear your Kiwanis pin and beware of the Secret Greeter!
