The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – March 1, 2000

Meghan Serwin, Editor

"Oh, What A Beautiful Morning" it was, both outside and in, as Ed Moulton led us in that classic following Inez Pickering’s piano introduction. Anthony Portantino led the Pledge of Allegiance and Harold Arman provided the invocation.

Members introducing guests included yours truly, who led the applause for LCE Terrific Kid Trisha Ashford and her mother, Mary; Phil Hammonds, who brought Sharon Collins; and Sheila Cook, who had along both Diane DellaValle of the Antique House and Fire Captain Mike Stokes.

LCHS Key Clubbers David Zhao and Chris Lee, with an assist from Jim Reynolds, made a pitch for chaperones for the Key Club dance this Friday night, March 3, which benefits IDD and Key Club activities. Anyone who is interested in chaperoning should contact Jim or Ken Lowe.

Board announcements from Jim Reynolds included a request that all Committee Reports and Special Reports be delivered to Jim Barrett, our secretary pro tem, before this weekend. Reports should include hours worked, people working, key achievements, and funds raised and/or spent. In addition, as we are still the sponsoring group for the Lincoln Heights Key Club, Jim asked for volunteers to join Ed Moulton and him at that club’s Monday noon meetings until a more proximate sponsor can be found. Jim also announced that Lillian Masters, the widow of our deceased member Joe Masters, has been made an honorary member; all should welcome her!

Other announcements came from Tom Slaughter (aka Webmaster Tom), who tested our collective manual dexterity, decided we can handle internet access to the club website, and proposed that the online calendar become our official one. FYI, the website is at www.lacanadakiwanis.org; Tom’s e-mail is webteam@lacanadakiwanis.org. Jim Edwards announced an Inter-club opportunity with the Sunland-Tujunga club next Tuesday, March 7; sign up with Jim and carpool. Ed Moulton announced that City approval for our Soap Box Derby is "practically" final, and asked interested volunteers to join him at the Derby Committee’s inaugural meeting at the YMCA on March 11 at 9 a.m. Jerry Healey spoke of the K-Kids installation and charter banquet (pizza!) to take place at the Palm Crest cafeteria next Wednesday evening. Anthony Portantino challenged one and all to drop $20 in the Children’s Hospital buckets, and reminded us that a representative from the hospital will join us next week to accept a check representing last year’s donations. Bill Scherkey updated our IDD fundraising: having raised over $17,000, we have helped 340,000 kids – quite an accomplishment! Hal Crockett brought pictures of the Ethiopian woman who received the sewing machine we donated through a local church. Carl Christensen, reporting on the Jack Hastings Memorial Gazebo, said his committee hopes to convince the City to underwrite the cost of materials if we provide the labor. Jack Dawson spoke of the "Ed Moulton Memorial Paper Drive," which is ongoing – bring your old newspapers to Jack’s vehicle before each meeting. Jim Edwards had flyers for the Million One Club: a $25 donation to support the IDD project buys your membership in this illustrious organization.

Happy Bucks came from Frosty Boyd, who told a joke based on the Mann Act that I heard in law school in the early 1980s; from Hal Crockett, who honored his grandson’s leap year birthday; from Joel Smith, who paid $100 to honor his son’s 30th, his wife’s 60th, and his dad’s 90th (hey, Joel, doesn’t that add up to $180?); and from Howard Backer, who was glad to celebrate his brother’s birthday.

A most informative program was presented by Manny De Leon of Blue Shield, who spoke about health insurance options for seniors.

Next Week: Dick DeGrey will sell raffle tickets; Meghan Serwin will lead the flag salute; Anthony Portantino will do the invocation; and Daryal Gant will continue as Sergeant-at-Arms. Anthony will also present the program, involving the beneficiaries of our Children’s Hospital donations.
