The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – March 15, 2000

Meghan Kathleen Dooner Serwin, Editor

It wasn’t quite St. Patrick’s Day yet, but you wouldn’t know it by us! Many members got a head start on the wearin’ o’ the green, and Inez Pickering played some memorable Irish tunes, including my own favorite, "Danny Boy." Ed Moulton then led us all in "My Wild Irish Rose," the possibly risqué lyrics of which made some of us Irish roses blush. Tom Slaughter (conspicuously not wearing green) led the Pledge of Allegiance, while Joel Smith (likewise green-less) gave an invocation admonishing us to make an opportunity out of every obstacle – a sentiment my Irish ancestors certainly took to heart when they left their blighted potatoes behind and moved here!

Guests included Jerry Healey’s father-in-law, Ted Davis; Sheila Cook’s invitees, John Cullen and Mike Stokes; LCHS Key Clubbers Jenny O’Connor and Christine Chang; Ed Moulton’s wife Connie; Tom Gilfoy’s wife Dodie; and Pat Flynn’s wife Joyce.

Irish humor abounded, with Jerry Healey reminding us that God only invented whiskey to keep the Irish from ruling the world; Frosty Boyd delivering one about a barkeeper who won’t re-tail after midnight; Phil Anderson telling us about the O’Shaunessy twins getting drunk again (the assist on that one goes to Jack Dawson, who told it at our table before the meeting began); Al Perry, Sr. on George W. Bush’s encounter with Moses; and Ed Moulton cracking wise about the man who used his seeing eye dog to look around. Happy Bucks came from Jeanne Broberg, who was elated about the AA rating our school bonds have received (if you want to buy a bond, call George K. Baum & Co. at (916) 443-5525, or call Jeanne for more details). Jeanne also celebrated her birthday (she claims to get a year younger with each birthday, which explains how she can be a grandma while still looking like a kid herself) and bragged quite rightfully about the wonderful ring (set with all of her children’s birthstones) she got from her hubby for Valentine’s Day. She also shared her strong regard for teachers, saying that if she ruled the world (or even just the state) they’d make 3 times what they do now. Elizabeth Georgeon had a happy buck for Tom and Dodie Gilfoy’s contribution of the rock wall section of Descanso’s newly renovated Circle Garden, while Jim Reynolds joined the Century Club for IDD.

Announcements were led by Jim Reynolds, who reminded us of the March 27 board meeting, one topic of which will be a proposal to help build an outdoor science laboratory at La Cañada Elementary School. Joel Smith asked for help with this weekend’s travelog, and also for Hickson fund contributions. Ed Moulton reminded us all to sign up for Vons e-scrip, and to come to the Soap Box Derby Committee meeting at his house (1003 Vista del Valle) next Tuesday evening. Jerry Healey said last week’s K-Kids chartering and installation was a success, while Tom Slaughter -- who boasted of getting Ed Moulton wired for internet access – assured us our e-mail addresses will remain confidential in his care. Pat Anderson had a reminder about the March 29 program featuring actor Robert Forster -- be sure to bring a guest! Carl Christensen told us of the March 28 groundbreaking for the Jack Hastings Memorial Gazebo, while Dave Spence announced that our own Harold Arman has been chosen as La Cañada’s official Senior Citizen, and will be fêted with a luncheon at a later date.

Our own Tom Sleeman presented an interesting and informative program about Heritage Square, that eye-catching collection of restored Victorian buildings just off the Pasadena Freeway. He told us about the incredible growth Los Angeles sustained in the waning years of the 19th century, when Heritage Square’s eight buildings – including houses, a church, a carriage barn, and a train depot – were built. After our meeting, Tom led a lucky few on a tour of the buildings themselves.

The raffle winner was Ed Moulton (or so he claimed -- Connie was holding that winning ticket!).

Next Week: Ed Moulton will sell raffle tickets; Pat Flynn will lead the flag salute and also host four Terrific Kids; John Torrey will do the invocation, while Daryal Gant continues as Sergeant-at-Arms. The LCHS Key Club will take over our program, so look out – anything could happen! Talk about your March Madness . . .

Thought for the week (passed down to my father, James Joseph Dooner, from his grandmother, Mary Gallagher Dooner): God is good, but never dance in a small boat.
