The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – Feb 28, 2001

Jeanne Broberg - Editor

INTRO: Inez Pickering brought us right in out of the rain. Following the President's welcome, Immediate Past President Jim Reynolds rallied us around the flag for a salute and Don Icardo thanked Heavenly Father for our many blessings and asked for His help.

GUESTS: Ken Lowe's pretty partners were Keyclubbers Erica Shahhazian and Catharine Chong, both 11th graders, both joining us for the first time. Dottie Hazel introduced me as a guest-cost me some happy bucks to explain that I just finished as chairman of the Assistance League of Flintridge Bargain Box - at 12:15 p.m. today-what's wrong with the picture, when am I taking a break? Those happy bucks also make it legal for me to encourage you all to clean out your closets and bring donations to the Bargain Box, 4607 Oakwood-hey come and shop too.

SATURDAY MAY 19TH: That, is our 2nd annual Soap Box Derby, officially the Los Angeles Foothills Soap Box Derby sponsored by the La Cañada Kiwanis Club. Last year 48 boys and girls participated, 3 going on to Akron and taking 2 of the 9 National prizes. This year the event will be all packed into one day, with a goal of serving 60-65 kids. Michigan Hill is already reserved through the city. (the date is in big print because if you don't know it, you will be fined: be ware, be square)

Tuesday March 6th, 7:00 p.m. YMCA (after you vote) Soap Box Derby Kickoff Meeting: Already on board are Daryal Gant, chairman, Ed Moulton, assistant chairman (they've switched positions from last year), Howard Backer finances, Bill Scherkey sponsorships, Eileen Ferber celebrity race, Bob Martin historian, and consultant Sharon Benoit publicity.

OUR CLUB PINS: Thanks to Glen Pettit's good (?) idea, you were fined if you didn't have your Kiwanis pin on -get it out, dust it off, WEAR IT. You are expected to be pinned even when you're being photographed for the LA Times, ask Tom Gilfoy.

BIG DECISION: With Jack Orr's prompting and Joan Peter's fine tuning, new policy, whoever win's the raffle sells the next week (old custom renewed) and you receive your money the next week after you sell the tickets.

PRAYERFULLY: Our prayers go out to Tom Smith's family and to Bob Slattery who is recuperating slowly.

INTERCLUBS: 28 of us are still in the picklebarrel, where we will be charged rent after April 1st. Call Pat Anderson to join in coming up opportunities to fix that: Wednesday March 21st La Cañada AM Club to hear from Jimmy Weldon why we are so hard headed, or Tuesday March 27 Montrose La Crescenta at Le Betulle Ristorante 2383 Foothill Blvd. by the carwash.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS: March 14th Flintridge Prep Key Club, 3/21 Edison on Energy, 3/28 Dennis Croxen and the YMCA (after which Dick DeGrey is arranging for 10 of us to try the Sheriff's department firing range), 4/4 the manager of the Metropolitan Water District, 4/11 Methodist Church Reverend Richard Bolin and 4/18 La Canadian of the Year.

TODAY'S PROGRAM: RIGHT IN OUR OWN BACKYARD - Tom Gilfoy introduced our own Richard Schulhof, executive director of Descanso Gardens for the past 7 years. Right in our own backyard-we all feel ownership of Descanso, we appreciate its beauty & can now honor it even more. The LA Times garden editor recently named Descanso "Southern California's greatest Spring Garden."-see the 1,000's of tulips now. The week Descanso was featured on the front page of The Times and in the SC Living section, 10,000 folks came to our home garden. The garden teaches folks how to do their own home gardens, on a smaller scale, but mixing perennials and annuals. They've done the "Top Ten of the Tulips", evaluating over 70 varies to choose those that perform best in our climate. The Camellia Forrest includes varieties Richard gathered from China. Enthusiasts from 22 countries came to the International Camellia Congress held in the gardens. For you history buffs, in 1953 the county acquired the gardens and when they almost sold it in 1957, 25 ladies organized to save the garden, and that Guild has saved it every since. The tram was purchased by the ladies in 1960. These days, annually over 580 volunteers give over 35,000 hours docenting and doing heavy gardening work. The Garden is now run in a partnership between the County and the Guild, by the year 2013 it should be totally independent of the County. The Garden serves school children. Over 300 students from 18 schools have their own garden plots. The physically and mentally challenged can enjoy the garden. The 3rd annual Harvest Festival Concert features kids using garden tools, rakes, etc as musical instruments. Don't forget the upcoming Easter egg hunt for 1100 plus eggs or kids. Way to go Richard!!!
