The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – February 23, 2000 Eileen Ferber, Editor OPENING The "sound of music" made everyone feel cheery, as Inez Pickering performed her magic on the keyboard. We had an outstandingly large turnout, considering it was a day only ducks should have been outdoors. Choral Director Ed Moulton led us in "America the Beautiful." Ed performed double duty and also led us in the flag salute. Don Davidson provided the invocation. GUESTS Anthony Portantino introduced our special guests. We had an interclub from Sunland-Tujunga, including President Al Teran, President-elect R.A. Fisher, Jerry Friedman (he did the introductions),Marilyn Strhight and Michael Fisher. They were given a warm welcome on a chilly day outside. Other guests included Catherine Kim and Jing mai O’Conner from the LCHS Key Club, introduced by Ken Lowe. Dennis Croxen brought along folks from the Crescenta-Canada YMCA, including Craig Prentice, the senior director of teens at the YMCA; Erin A. Whyle from Flintridge Prep; Gil Lee from Crescenta Valley High School and Sandy Ryan from La Cañada High School. Ed Moulton and Bob Slattery appropriately led us in a Kiwanis rendition of "Singing in the Rain." ANNOUNCEMENTS President Jim Reynolds announced we have received the Kiwanis Founders’ Day Award from CAL-NEV-HA. He called attention to the "Million One Club" applications at each table and asked all interested in joining to do so soon. Our club has seven Hixon Awards, with one more to be presented in the future. So far, Howard Backer, Jim Reynolds, Jim Ackland, Bill Pickering and Joel Smith have contributed. The Prez urged all that are thinking about contributing to do it quickly. Our Lt. Gov. wants to announce how many there are on June 4, but he wants to have a count by April. On June 4 we will be at the Gene Autrey Western Heritage Museum for a western barbecue. Our Lt. Gov. Norm Allen will be performing and Gov. Terri Neumann will also attend. Howard Backer announced he had a note from Lillian Masters (Joe’s wife). The family asks that anyone who wishes to make a contribution in Joe’s honor should give it to the noon Kiwanis, since it was Joe’s favorite club. Howard will be happy to take your money. Jerry Healey said the next printing of the place mats we use on the tables will include the "K Kids" from Palm Crest. As of March 8, it will be an official organization. An installation and dinner is planned and we are all invited. He said pizza is heading the list of desired installation dinners. He also asked anyone who is interested in helping with this new group to call him. Pat Flynn read a thank you letter from Sherry Jung, one of the Terrific Kids from Palm Crest Elementary, who attended last week’s meeting. We were reminded about the Children's Hospital buckets on the tables and that we need to fill them. Bill Scherkey reminded everyone of the IDD gift certificates that are available. Call him for one. The Prez said the Website is coming along nicely and encouraged everyone to get online and look at it. The bar code on our bulletin is there through the efforts of Bob Slattery. It can ultimately save us $350 a year to have it on the bulletins. However, Slattery blew his kudos with a bad joke (probably one of Frosty’s). Do we have a fine for bad jokes? Pete Palermo thanked everyone for the get-well card we sent to wife Nancy, who may be facing major surgery. President Reynolds has tickets for the hockey game at the Staples Center on Feb. 29. Tickets cost $25 each and game time is 7:00 p.m. Anyone who wants to take advantage of this opportunity should call him. Pres. Reynolds reminded everyone there is a board meeting next Monday night at 7 p.m. at Verdugo Hills Hospital. It’s an important one! HAPPY/SAD BUCKS Pat Anderson had a sad buck because the rain tested the roof of their home and it also tested her windshield – both failed. George Lutes had a happy buck for enjoying retirement. Both the SRTM from JPL and our Rose Parade float were winners and he worked on both of them. Jack Dawson is pleased there is a new lake in Riverside and we won’t need as much water from Northern California. Ed Moulton offered up a happy buck for the excellent "Christian Edition" concert last Sunday. UPCOMING PROGRAM Pat Anderson announced a ‘SOSO" program is coming our way on March 15. "SOSO" translates into "Spouse or Significant Other." On March 15, we will go to Heritage Square for a guided tour, following our meeting. The tour is to be led by our own Tom Sleeman. The opportunity is limited to the first 20 people who sign up. If anyone has any questions about the tour, talk to Tom. Questions about the program should be directed to Pat. PROGRAM Pat Anderson introduced Dennis Croxen, director of the Crescenta-Canada YMCA since 1984. Croxen turned over the program to the youth that came with him, so they could present an overview of the teen programs and the "Y," and in particular the "Youth in Government" program and recent conference in Sacramento. Our delegation was the largest in the state, with 100 high school students attending. NEXT WEEK Raffle: Chuck Gulick Flag Salute: Anthony Portantino Sgt. At Arms: Tom Sleeman Invocation: Harold Arman Program: Manny DeLeon, Regional Sales Manager, Blue Shield of California. He will discuss health care and HMO procedures.
