The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – Feb 21, 2001 It wasn't raining, for a change, and we were all a bit giddy as a result of the nice weather. Inez Pickering picked out happy tunes at the piano, and Ed Moulton had us sing both verses of America the Beautiful. (Ed, will you explain that part about the pilgrims' feet to me some time?) Howard Backer led the Pledge of Allegiance and Jim Ackland quoted Corinthians in his invocation. Ed led us in a chorus of Smile and the World Smiles With You so rousing he almost had me believing it was true. Guests included Lorne Person Jr. and Lorne Person Sr.; Phil Hammons' lovely wife Harriet; Hal Crockett's lovely wife Martha; Dick DeGrey's lovely and patient wife Shirley; and Key Clubber/Eagle Scout candidate Tom Hurlbutt with Ken Lowe. I had two Terrific Kids from La Cañada Elementary: Eleanor Jaeger (with mom Donna and dad Jim) and Eric Poppenheimer (with mom Linda and nanny Marie Powell-Lipton). We inducted a new member, Bachy Bachmayer, sponsored by Hal Crockett. Seems the Crocketts and the Bachmayers met half a century ago as neighbors in Glendale, and have lived within a block of each other ever since. Bachy's now a widower with three grown children; retired from Eastman Kodak and Technicolor, he will be joining our Youth Services Committee. This week's announcements made me hungry for sweets and sours. Jack Orr started off with a reminder about the City Council Candidates' Forum, which starts at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Van de Kamp Hall. We're responsible for supplying cookies (there's the sweets); those who signed up (DeGrey, Wallace, Scherkey, Ackland, Pettit, Dawson, Hazel and Peters) must not forget to bring same, lest the rest of us go hungry. Pat Anderson gave her now-familiar nudge to those of us still in the pickle barrel (there's the sour) that it'll cost us to stay there come April. Phil Anderson wants folks to sign up to do invocations, while Ed Moulton suggests that cards, call or visits might cheer up Bob Slattery during his convalescence at Royal Palms in Glendale (630 W. Broadway, Room 49C). Our very entertaining program speaker, introduced by Bob Wallace, was A.M. club member Jack Wheeler, who told us about his career as a film editor. Jack has worked on dozens of films and television shows, including Bonanza, Charlie's Angels, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and a handful of Elvis Presley movies. He pointed out that although filmgoers are rarely aware of it, editing plays a huge role in establishing the mood and impact of a film. Jack demonstrated this by casting Daryal Gant and Eileen Ferber as a couple who meets cute while passing one another on the street. Fifty takes later, Jack had enough pretend film to edit into a serviceable ten-second scene. The tone of the scene would depend on who got what close-ups and what the audience was permitted to see up whose sleeve. Jack proved to be a pretty demanding director, but then again Daryal and Eileen had zero chemistry and their acting was about as convincing as a politician's smile. Next week: Dave Spence will sell raffle tickets; Don Icardo will provide the invocation; and Jim Reynolds will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
