The La Cawañian La Cañada, CA – February 16, 2000 Eileen Ferber, Editor OPENING Inez Pickering brightened a rather dreary day with her musical expertise. Louie Juarez of Vons, explained the benefits of "e-scrip," a way for us to raise more money for the club. Unlike the old scrip system, there is no paper to carry around and the organization doesn’t need to put money into this "up front." Every time we purchase at Vons or Safeway, a percentage of what we spend goes to the Kiwanis Foundation. Louie and the club have applications at Vons. The cost is $10 per card annually to join. Vons does not get that fee; it goes to the company that handles the accounting for "e-scrip." Our "Music Man," Ed Moulton, directed us in "God Bless America," Dennis Croxen provided inspiration and Ray Hill led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. GUESTS Lt. Gov. Norm Allen was our honored guest and our program. He was introduced by Pat Anderson, program chair. Pat Flynn introduced the Terriffic Kids from Palm Crest. Students Lisa Lock and parents Mr. & Mrs. Michael Lock; Kaveri Thakoor and parents Mr. & Mrs. Anil Thakoor and Sherry Jung and parents Mr. & Mrs. Larry Jung were recipients. Terriffic Kid Chelsea Guglielmino and parents Mr. & Mrs. Richard Gugliemino were unable to attend. Ken Lowe introduced LCHS Key Club members Grace Kim, who plays the piano at our Travelogues and Valerie Arvoleda. Additional guests introduced by Joan Peters included Joyce Flynn (Pat’s wife) and Martha Crockett (Hal’s wife). ANNOUNCEMENTS Gaby Pryor has resigned due to her busy schedule, which keeps her in Pasadena. The Prez announced that Jeanne Broberg will replace her on the board. We were sorry to hear that our ranks are diminished, with the death of Joe Masters, a 20-year Kiwanis member and former treasurer. Pete Palermo did not attend the meeting, since wife Nancy had surgery. A card of sympathy was circulated to Joe’s wife, Lillian. A get well card was signed for Nancy. Tom Slaughter said the Kiwanis Website is about 40 percent completed. He has a new digital camera and will be downloading photos each week. He is also looking for some club photos to put on the site. Give him a call or bring your pictures to a meeting. He promises to return them. Ed Moulton reminded everyone of the free concert by the "Christian Edition" Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church. Pat Flynn reminded us to put some money in the Childrens Hospital buckets on the tables. The DeGrey (Dick) and Healey (Jerry) combo reminded us of La Cañadan of the Year day, which is April 26. Nominations need to be in by Feb. 29. Dick and Jerry have the forms; call them if you wish to nominate someone. Prez Jim Reynolds said at last week’s District Mid-Year Convention, Gov. Terri Neumann focused on an appeal for IDD. He placed Travel Directories on each table – Kiwanis bargains! He announced Feb. 21 is the Division Board Meeting and Feb. 28 is the Club’s Board Meeting. He wants all board members to be prepared to have their photo taken at the Feb. 28 meeting, for the new Website. HAPPY & SAD BUCKS AND MONEY IN GENERAL Lou Roberts gave money – he is relieved to have completed his master’s degree in business administration. Frosty Boyd had a happy buck because wife (and member) Fran is doing well enough to chase him around the kitchen. Howard Backer had a significant birthday (70). All of his children came for the event. His significant contributions were joining the century club and giving $100 for IDD. Bravo, Howard! Ed Moulton’s sad buck made us pause to remember Joe Masters. Joan Peters had a happy buck for winning the raffle last week – she took hubby Todd out for dinner. Hal Thomas was happy to report that a hiker he and wife Julia (she’s a.m. Kiwanis) knew from the Sierra Club had been rescued in the mountains by none other than our own Jim Edwards. Dick DeGrey had a happy buck because wife Shirley’s eye surgery went well. PROGRAM Not only were we graced by the presence of our Lt. Gov. Norm Allen, we were entertained by him as he brought us up to date on the condition of Division 3. We have 11 clubs and 28 new members since the beginning of 2000. When he took office, he promised better communication among clubs, a business and travel directory (the first) and a division newsletter. He’s already accomplished all of that. In his "spare" time, he’s an accomplished guitar player, songwriter and singer. He just recorded an album, a portion of the proceeds goes to Kiwanis Family House. He talked about how he has been able, with others, to improve the 13 apartments there where families with children who are being treated for cancer can stay free of charge. He closed his program with a new song, dedicated to his father. Proceeds from it will be donated to IDD. NEXT WEEK Program: Dennis Croxen – YMCA Director Invocation: Don Davidson Flag Salute: Ed Moulton Raffle: Tom Gilfoy Sgt. At Arms: Daryal Gant
