The La Cawañian

La Cañada, CA – February 9, 2000

Eileen Ferber, Editor

THE OPENING

We were delighted with Inez Pickering’s musical entertainment prior to lunch. Van de Kamp Hall was decorated with red and white balloons, thanks to the talent of Sharin Orr. Maestro Ed Moulton led us in "The Star Spangled Banner," followed by Mary Ann Olson Flores providing a poetic prayer. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Chuck Gulick.

GUESTS

We had many guests. Among those publicly introduced were: A.M. Kiwanians, with Joy Gifford making introductions of Claire Slaughter, Clovis Buchanan, Bill Barber, Dick Barley, Julia Thomas, Margaret Johnson and Jerry Lampton. Vic Legerton represented the La Crescenta Club.

Special guests were Rose Queen Sophia Bush, of Westridge School in Pasadena; LCF’s Princess Lauren Beattie from La Cañada High School; Princess Caitlin Bogert, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy; Princess Mariasol Pena, Arcadia High School; Princess Kellie Handy, South Pasadena High School; Princess Grace Chen, San Marino High School and Princess Carol Huang, San Marino High School.

Our Royal Visitors were introduced by Pete Palermo. Pete announced that in his 25 years in Kiwanis, and even before he joined, having the Rose Queen and Royal Court as lunch guests has been a tradition.

Attending with the young women were Princess Lauren Beattie’s parents, Kim and Andy Beattie and the royal escorts, Tom Wallis and wife Arline, Ron Dierkens and Paige Parrish, Captain of the Escort Committee.

Others who were singled out from the audience were: LCUSD School Superintendent Lorie Gonia, LCF Mayor Carol Liu and Council member Anthony Portantino, Charlie Plowman, Jr., publisher of the LCF Outlook was introduced.

Additional guests included Bill McDonald, Helen Perry, Jackie Perry, Robert L. Anderson, Rae Kelly, Mary Gant, Connie Moulton, Blanche and Mareleon Barrett, John Kelsey, Dee Wilson, Barbara Smith, Julia Thomas, Rhoda Backer, Mary Lou Perry and Ruth Hunt.

Paige Parrish introduced our royal guests and each of the women reminisced over their most fun and most memorable events since they were selected as the Queen and Royal Court for the 111th Rose Parade.

Princess Kellie Handy wants to be a firefighter and paramedic. She talked about the etiquette training they received. It didn’t help when she tried to cut a raw carrot and it flew across the room. She was moved by the visit to Five Acres and the poems and songs the children there performed.

Princess Caitlin Bogert talked about being named the queen of love at Medieval Times (where they had no silverware) and when they went to see "Fantasia."

Princess Mariasol Pena recalled how frightened she had been during the judging and then later learned what a close-knit family group they all became after their selection.

Princess Carol Huang wants to be the Secretary of State someday. She said once people learn that, they don’t remember anything else about her. She was overwhelmed at the parade and recently she rode in the Chinese New Year’s Parade.

Princess Grace Chen, aka "Princess Crash," told how she had four near-misses her first day of driving. However, she went on to "drive" the Goodyear Blimp! Her most moving event was a visit to Huntington Hospital where a little girl who cannot eat or drink on her own touched her heart.

Princess Lauren Beattie, the only true football fan in the group, was delighted when Wisconsin won the Bowl Game. She plans to go there for college. She admitted she has always wanted to be a princess.

Queen Sophia Bush, an aspiring actress, told how they are known as "The Singing Court" and described their many impromptu performances. She will always treasure the special friendships they all have made as royal representatives of the Tournament of Roses.

Mayor Carol Liu presented each woman with a certificate of recognition and a city pin from the city of LCF.

Song leader Ed Moulton led the men in the club in a version of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," sung to the royal guests. (Does anyone know we have women in our club, too?)
