The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

We will be Feeding the Floaters on December 29th.  If you want to help, show up at 6:45 p.m. under the bridge.

Bill Watts has started a Rose Bowl game fundraiser.  It will be a 50/50 pool to raise money for our Foundation.  If you haven't signed up already, the card will be available at the sign-in table next Wednesday.  Each square is $5.

Keep February 12 free for our Kiwanis Day At The Races.  Harriet Hammons will have more details in January.

Next week:  Flag Salute by Karl Johnson, Invocation by Ken Lowe, and Ticket Sales by Pat Anderson.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Diane DellaValle gave a brief preview of the next two programs.  Sheriff's Captain Tim Peters will be here next week and his presentation is always very enlightening.  The next week will be a very entertaining program about old-time movies - Marvin at the Movies.

Pat Anderson reminded us about the Chamber of Commerce installation dinner on January 26th; invitations are in the mail.  Joe Thompson will be inducted as President.Dick DeGrey is having a hard time getting to our meetings but is truly missed.

FROSTY'S SLA REPORT

Carl Gieseke was well enough to go out of town to spend some time with his niece.

THE PROGRAM

Steve Hagerty gave us a great overview of the history of model trains and then gave us A Ride on the East Valley Line.  This is the model train presentation at Travel Town in Griffith Park.  A private model train organization rents the space very inexpensively from L.A. City in exchange for providing viewing on the weekend.  The tracks have been designed to replicate local southern California tracks as they were in the 1950s, including the Tehachapi loop and the train stations in Glendale and downtown Los Angeles.  Thanks Steve!

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Ed Moulton … was Happy for the transportation to and from the meeting provided by Nick Berkuta.

Harriet Hammons … thought it was worth a Happy Buck that Clyde Hemphill was working on the LCF Rose Parade float today and missed the meeting.  She had a Sad Buck because the Secret Greeter was too short to be seen.  Another Happy Buck for helping with the Kiwanis float all day yesterday.

Mary Gant … had a Happy Buck because Rutgers didn't win and a Sad Buck for something related to that game.

Joan Peters … was Happy she ran into Richard Schulhoff at the race track last week, and even Happier because she had a winning day there.

Tom Burrows … had seven Happy Bucks because he was able to spend Christmas in Solvang with his seven grandchildren.  He is quite proud because he has had two grandsons accepted for admission at Harvard.

Nick Berkuta … was Happy because Jack Dawson was generous in sharing his source book for the Mark Twain quote he used at last week's meeting.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading America the Beautiful, Hi Neighbor, and Auld Lang Syne

Opening: flag salute by Joel Smith and inspiration by Harriet Hammons

Guests:  Jeb Long introduced his brother-in-law, George Kalanta, who was visiting from New Jersey; Pat Anderson introduced Gloria and Tom Lang; and Martha was the guest of her husband of 63 years, Hal Crockett.

Master of the Cash Box:  Joel Smith

Birthdays:  Mary Gant missed last week's meeting because she was celebrating her birthday with her grandchildren.  She contributed $1 for each year ... holding at 39.  Prez Paul led everyone in a standing ovation for all her hard work and financial donations to our Club and Foundation.

Fines:  Kiwanis pins hasn't been raising much revenue recently, but the Secret Greeter - Jack Dawson made up for that deficit.

Frosty’s Challenge:  With plenty of time for a challenge, Frosty, Bachy Bachmayer and Bill Watts all had us chuckling.  Bachy won the vote by applause.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Pat Anderson
