“A life not lived for others is not a life.”
John Wooden

Many thanks to Harriet Hammons for planning and executing
one of the best Holiday Parties we have ever had. What a Social
Committee Chairman!!!
More thanks to Steve Hagerty for stepping in to lead the
meeting last week. Handled it like a pro.
And more thanks to Linda Magarian who stepped in for
Matt Regan last week and announced the beginning of the
annual Holiday Toy Drive donations.
The luncheon for the President of Kiwanis International
is being held on Friday, December 30 at the Pasadena Hilton.
Those who have heard him speak say we are in for a real treat.
If you haven't signed up yet, contact Howard Backer.
Additional help is needed on the Kiwanis Rose Float on December
17 and on the 27th. Contact Laurel Patric (our Lt.
Governor) if you can pitch in. lpatric@sbcglobal.net
Next week: Ticket Sales by Harriet Hammons, Flag Salute
by Jim Reynolds and Invocation by Daryal Gant.
Jim Ackland spoke for all of us and thanked Harriet again for the wonderful party on Sunday. The LCHS Chamber Singers were terrific!!! As Chair of our New Member Acquisition and Retention Committee, Jim reminded us there are many people in our community who would also enjoy our programs and activities and would be active in our volunteer work. We are looking for new members. All of us need to be inviting member candidates to lunch to get acquainted with our Club. Jim will even do the inviting if you just give him the name.
Mike Leininger has the date set for Feed the Floaters and already has some volunteers. A few more would be welcome. Just meet under the bridge on Thursday evening, December 29 at 6:45 p.m. to help.
Pat Anderson encouraged all of us to set the evening of January26 aside for the La Cañada Chamber Installation Dinner; Joe Thompson, our Kiwanis Lt. Governor last year, will be sworn in as the new Chamber President.
Diane DellaValle reminded us to think about bringing guests to our next two meetings, as the programs will be special. Next week the Flintridge Prep Singers will entertain us, and the following week Steve Hagerty will tell us about the Griffith Park trains.
Matt Regan hopes everyone will make a bigger donation to the Holiday Toy Drive this year (than they did last year). The stock market is up, folks! The toys are taken to the Door of Hope in Pasadena. This is a facility that takes in homeless families, helps the parents find work, and then transitions them back into homes or apartments in the community. An excellent organization to support!
Bachy asked that we all remember Children's Hospital on our Christmas gift list and urged us to donate generously to the collection tubs on each lunch table.
Hal Crockett let us know we received three thank you letters for our contributions to overseas charitable organizations. We have recently sent funds to Guatemala to rebuild a hospital after a flood, to a Bulgarian orphanage to cover the costs of their pharmacy needs for a year, and to the Carter Center for it's River Blindness project.
Patsy Christensen is feeling much better after her hip replacement surgery and should be able to join us next week. Dick DeGrey is perking along and would have joined us today except he had some plumbing problems. (Frosty assumed he was talking about the water pipes for the house.) Carl Gieseke is ready to come to a meeting and feeling much better.
SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Daryal Gant
presented
Prez Paul
with a
new, generic gavel. The gavel is on temporary loan, but if the
Prez
does a
good job all year his name will be put on the gavel and he will
be able to keep it.
Daryal
made a
second presentation to
Prez Paul.
It was a picture of Bush and Cheney - with thanks for our
Club's volunteer efforts and signed by the U.S. Prez. (I don't
think our Prez
will spend
much time looking for an appropriate frame.)
Dr. Thom Mason is head of the Jazz Department at USC and gave us an amazing overview of what jazz "is and isn't" in just a half hour. He covered the history of jazz, and demonstrated the many variations of music that fall within the sphere of jazz. Dr. Mason had a great sense of humor and had music and a Power Point presentation with many interesting pictures. He volunteers in south central Los Angeles every week teaching children how to play jazz. His Jazz Arts Foundation supports this program by selling music CDs he has produced. We actually received a very condensed version of his "Jazz from A to Z" talk; Dr. Mason likes to speak before groups and would like to be invited. It is his way of selling his CDs and raising money for his Jazz Arts Foundation.

Frosty Boyd … couldn't wait for the Frosty Challenge and had to pay a Happy Buck for telling a very funny joke "before it's time." To be fair, the joke was extremely relevant to the immediately preceding discussion about the USC - Texas Bowl game.
Fred Schooley … also had to pay a Happy Buck because he couldn't wait to challenge Frosty and had us laughing about a sports car that went from 1 to 200 really fast.
Bob Wallace … was very Happy to become a grandfather again this morning. His daughter had a baby boy.
Aaron Solomon … had twenty Happy Bucks to celebrate three recent events at the Community Center that were very successful. Kiwanians turned out in force for the annual fundraising dinner; 1,100 adult runners registered for the Run for the Hungry on Thanksgiving Day, and last weekend's annual Ceramics Sale raised $33,000!
Linda Magarian … is looking forward to a visit from her son who will be with her to celebrate his 32nd birthday. She had two Happy Bucks because he will be staying with her for three weeks..
Bachy Bachmayer … has a bright new outlook on life and was very Happy his cataract surgery was so successful..
Ed Moulton … was very Happy he is getting so much help with transportation to our Wednesday meetings. He especially thanked Howard Backer, Stretch (Nick) Berkuta, and Steve Hagerty.
Music: piano music by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading God Bless America, Hi Neighbor, and On Kiwanis.
Guests: Daryal introduced Paul Danin who worked with Daryal and Paul at JPL and was in a Key Club himself in high school. Paul Bustam, a retired LA County Sheriff's Deputy, was introduced as a great candidate to join our Club. Three spouses (spice) also joined us; Howard Backer brought Rhoda, Marge came with Bill Watts, and Hal Crockett arrived with Martha.
We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You: Matt Regan brought us up-to-date on where he's been and what he's been doing. He is working a lot. He is married now and is VP in the house (no longer boss of his own domain). His marriage is going well because of this new role that he has wisely assumed.
Master of the Cash Box: Nick Berkuta
Fundraisers: Prez Paul made a deal with Jeb Long. He will donate $140 to the Club if USC loses to Texas, and Jeb will donate $140 to the Club if Texas loses to USC.
Birthdays: Matt Regan's birthday is December 25th, and he joined the Century Club.
Fines: After those who weren't wearing their Kiwanis pins were fined $1, Harriet's name was pulled out of the hat to recite our Kiwanis defining statement. Clyde passed her a crib sheet and was fined $5 by the Prez for trying to help Harriet cheat. Harriet chose to pay $5 herself and was able to pass the buck to Clyde; he didn't need a cheat sheet and was able to recite the statement word for word.
Frosty’s Challenge: See Happy Bucks
Fifty-Fifty Drawing: No one seemed to have the winning number, and we all waited while Diane hunted and hunted through her purse looking for her tickets. When she finally found her tickets, she didn't have the winning one. Harriet woke up then, and it turned out she had the required number.
