Prez Paul was out-of-town, and Prez Elect Steve declared the podium a Dinuba Free Zone for the day.

Hal Thomas received Special Recognition for wearing his uniform in remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day.  Hal is probably the only Club Member who can still fit into his military uniform!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Mike Leininger doesn't know the exact day yet, but our Club will be providing and serving an evening meal to the Floaters again this year.  Mike will know the exact date by next week's meeting and will have a sign-up list at that time.

  • Deborah Weirick announced that the YMCA tree lot is now open and encouraged everyone to buy a Christmas tree there.  This is one of the Y's big annual fund raisers.

  • Harriet Hammons reminded everyone about the Holiday Party this Sunday.  It starts at five and you won't want to be late.  The Chamber Singers from LCHS will be singing for us at 5:30 p.m.

  • Harriet and Linda Magarian described their visit to Union Avenue Elementary School this morning.  As part of our Children's Literacy Project, we are providing books and bookmarks as rewards for a reading program for two second grade classes.  Once a child read fifteen books, the child receives a book to keep and a bookmark (designed by our own George Lutes).  It is a three part program, and each child will receive another book to keep after reading an additional 15 books, and a third book after a final 15 books are read.  One small girl has already read 60 books!

  • Diane DellaValle encouraged everyone to attend and bring a guest to next week's meeting.  The musical program is "Jazz From A To Z" and Tom Burrows will be providing extra sound equipment for the speaker, Thom Mason.

  • Linda Magarian stood in for Matt Regan and drew our attention to the Christmas Toy Drive flyers on the tables.  Just fill out the flyer with your name and monetary contribution and return the flyer to Howard Backer.  No shopping and no wrapping required.

  • Anthony Portantino announced that the RFP for Sewer District 5 is now available on the city website and is also available at the library.

  • Pat Flynn is encouraging members to attend the Terrific Kids award presentations this Friday at La Cañada Elementary and next Friday at Palm Crest.  Call Pat for more details.

  • Bob Wallace was passing out Directory updates for our 3-ring binders.  If you would like an electronic version of the directory, just send Bob an e-mail.

  • Clyde Hemphill has been busy updating every area on our Kiwanis Club web-site.  If you haven't checked it out lately, take a look.  Clyde is looking for feedback, corrections and additional information for the web-site.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Patsy Christenson was finally able to have her hip surgery.  Carl Giesecke and Dick DeGrey have both been finding it difficult to get to a meeting and do enjoy phone calls.

THE PROGRAM

Diane DellaValle introduced Jennifer Richards from Ahead With Horses.  This non-profit organization works with severely handicapped children from low income families, providing a program of developmental therapy through vaulting (gymnastics on a moving horse).  Often a child's last hope before being institutionalized is AHEAD (Accelerated Habilitation Education And Development) WITH HORSES.  We watched a video about the program; it was amazing what these children manage to do in spite of severe disabilities.  The program operates on a budget of less than $50,000 per year, yet offers programs to so many children.  Funding comes mainly from small contributions from individuals.  There is a two year waiting list.  With more funding, Jennifer could hire more therapists and help many more children.  The program really needs volunteers and cash contributions.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Pat Anderson … had a Sad Buck because her daughter Katherine was in a car accident yesterday but had a Happy Buck because she wasn't hurt.

Lloyd Welch … was Very Happy USC won last weekend.

Mary Gant …  had one Happy/Sad Buck because UCLA figured out what wouldn't work and did it throughout the entire game.

Jeb Long …  was Happy the University of Texas would be in the Rose Bowl game against USC.

Harriet Hammons …  was Happy to see Carlos Cortez at the meeting again.

Deborah Weirick … doesn't usually have anything to say about football, but her husband is from Oklahoma, and she was Happy the University of Tulsa would be playing in a Bowl game.

Daryal Gant … was Happy dreaming that USC will beat Texas at the Rose Bowl.

George Lutes …  was Sad because his wife is from Texas and they already have a bet on the Rose Bowl game.  He is afraid he will lose.

Pat Flynn … was very Happy that Navy beat Army.

Clyde Hemphill … was Happy that New Jersey State (Rutgers) will play against Arizona in a Bowl game.
