The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

Our Kiwanis International President, Steve Siemens, will the guest of honor at the Pasadena Hilton Kiwanis luncheon on Friday, December 30th.   Steve is a motivational speaker by profession, and those who have heard him speak say he is terrific.  This annual event is always enjoyable and Not-To-Be-Missed this year!  Put December 30 on your calendar right now.

If you want to see Key Clubbers decorating our Kiwanis Rose Parade float, that opportunity will be available on December 29th.  Dinner and a tour of the float decorating pavilion all starts at 5:00 p.m.

Another date for your calendar is December 11th for our Holiday Social.  December 7th is the last day to get your name on the reservation list.  Call Harriet Hammons if you have any questions.

Our Kiwanis Club was responsible for putting up the new Christmas lights last week in Glenola Park.  Three pictures of the work party were on display, and it looked like it took a lot of supervisors for one guy who was doing all the work up on a ladder.  The actual tree lighting ceremony will be held next Wednesday evening, November 30th from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help on the Kiwanis float on December 27th.

Looking several months ahead, February 12th will be a Day at the Races.

Next week:  Flag Salute by Daryal Gant and Invocation by Tom Slaughter

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Howard Backer was standing in for Bachy and exhorted all of us to contribute our $5 and $10 bills to Children’s Hospital.

Hal Crockett reported we raised $565 in individual contributions last week for the hospital in Guatemala.

Pat Anderson gave us the following Chamber of Commerce dates to set aside:  December 15th dinner at Oakmont for Joe Thompson’s election for COC President; January 26th for Joe’s installation.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Patsy Christianson and Carl Gieseke both appreciate phone calls.  Patsy is waiting for a surgery date and Carl is about ready to come to a Wednesday lunch meeting.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Bob Wallace did the honors again and presented permanent Kiwanis badges to Nick Berkuta and Fred Schooley.

THE PROGRAM

Diane DellaValle introduced our Kiwanis District Three Lt. Gov. Laurel Patric.  Laurel joined the Glendale Kiwanis Club in 1992, encouraged by a fellow librarian.  Laurel really didn’t know anything about Kiwanis when she joined, even though her dad had been a Kiwanian for a number of years.  Laurel will be visiting every club in the District this year, and today was her first official visit.  Laurel said she had wanted to give a Sad Buck, because her brother is president of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club and didn’t attend the Pasadena InterClub with our club today.  Laurel talked about our International President and his goals this year for every Kiwanian:  Believe in the Impossible, Expect Significant Results, Share the Vision Creatively, and Together Let’s Do It

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Elizabeth Calciano … had three Happy/Sad Bucks because although her two year old grandson was sick, she managed – even with her bad knee and back - to get him into his car seat in the back seat of her small car, and now he is well.

Joan Peters … said it was worth a whole lot more, but she had a Happy Buck for the forty turkeys the Flintridge Prep Key Club was cooking today, and for the forty complete Thanksgiving meals they will be delivering tomorrow.

Ken Lowe …  was pleased and Happy the La Cañada High School Key Club graciously baked a cake to welcome our Club members who attended the InterClub meeting with the Key Club last Thursday.

Clyde Hemphill … was Happy for all the help at Glenola Park last week.

Pat Liddell (guest from the Glendale Kiwanis Club) … had a Sad Buck for the color of the coat worn by our District Lt. Gov. Laurel Patric.

Jim Reynolds … was very Happy about the #9 standing of Auburn’s football team and donated a half Century Club.

Fred Schooly … was very Happy because a month ago he was suffering from an irregular heart beat and problems with his eyes, and now four weeks and three operations later he is feeling as good as new!.

Daryal Gant … had a Happy Buck for visiting grandchildren.

The Pasadena Club … had some real Happy Bucks because they just finished a big project supplying 22,000 traffic STOP signs that will be used to protect the Pasadena school children.

Harriet Hammons …  was surprised and Happy to run into past Club member Don Davidson at the Dona Maria.  Don moved away several years ago but was back in town visiting his son who is an actor on All My Children.

Carl Christensen … was grateful and Happy for all of Frosty Boyd’s work on the SLA Committee (of one).  Carl lost his mother several weeks ago and appreciated the support of the Club.  He also had a Happy Buck to celebrate the excellent Impressionist show which is currently at the Art Museum.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, who also took on the additional duties of Song Master and led us in God Bless America, and Hail Kiwanis.

Opening: flag salute by Howard Backer and inspiration by Carl Christensen

Guests:  Our Prez’ First Lady, Elaine Alexander, Hal Crockett’s First Lady Martha, and InterClub Kiwanis members from Pasadena and Glendale.

Master of the Cash Box:  Bob Wallace

Fines:  Prez Paul caught Tom Stafford off guard and waved an article from the NewsPress under his nose; the article was about Tom’s wife, Helen, and described their happy marriage and many other nice things about Helen and Tom.  Instead of a fine, Prez Paul called for a standing ovation in honor of the lovely life they have had together!  There was another newspaper article in the Valley Sun that started out:  “When I heard from Clyde Hemphill ….”  The Prez chastised Clyde because there was almost no mention of Kiwanis in the article, but refrained from a fine because the article was actually all about Clyde’s son, who is a great chef.    The Prez challenged Clyde to say the International Kiwanis defining statement.  Clyde couldn’t, the Prez repeated the defining statement, and then Diane DellaValle fined the Prez because he said “worldwide” instead of “global.”  Other fines included $1 for no Kiwanis pin and $1 for not shaking the hand of Secret Greeter Bill Watts.
