The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for others is not a
life.”
John Wooden

Mike Leininger was presented last
week as a candidate for the open seat on
our Board of Directors, and the Prez
led the election today. There was
not a single discent when the voice vote
was taken. Mike commented it is
the only election he has ever
won.
Next week: Flag Salute by Howard
Backer and Invocation by Carl
Christensen.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mike Leininger
invited anyone and everyone to show up
Thursday morning to help install the
lights in Granola Park. (That’s what he
said .….)
International
Understanding Committee Chairman Hal
Crockett had on his special hat and
told us there was a special collection
being taken today to support the
hospital in Guatemala that Don
Corbett was going to be talking
about during the program on the town
Santiago Atitlan. We also support a
student in Guatemala and a Christmas
card for our student will be available
to sign next week.
Pat Anderson urged
everyone to gather up some young ones
and attend the “Festival In Lights” at
Memorial Park on Thursday, December 1st
from 4-6 p.m. There will be five tons
of snow, live reindeer to pet, and Mr.
And Mrs. Santa Claus will arrive in an
antique fire truck. There will also be
live holiday music and the Miss LCF
Court finalists will be introduced.
Steve Hagerty
announced an InterClub for Thursday (the
17th) with the La Cañada High
School Key Club at noon.
Bob Wallace
encouraged everyone to attend the Travel
Adventure program this Saturday. Take a
beautiful trip through Europe’s Alps
without getting chilled or breathless,
enjoy the intermission desserts provided
by our Flintridge Prep Key Club, and
then go home to a good night’s sleep in
your own comfy bed. It’s the perfect
way to travel!
Deborah Weirick
encouraged anyone with free time to stop
by the YMCA and donate to the blood
drive.
FROSTY’S
SLA REPORT
Patsy Christianson
will be having surgery soon. Carl
Giesicke is much better and would
have attended our meeting today except
for a therapy appointment. Dick
DeGrey isn’t able to come to our
meetings and would really enjoy some
phone calls to keep him up-to-date on
our activities. Daryal added to
Frosty’s report to say that
Mary was better and back in her
right mind again.
TERRIFIC
KIDS
We were thrilled to have
four Terrific Kids from La Cañada
Elementary School today. Deborah
Weirick did a great job of
introducing each Terrific Kid and their
Terrific Parents. It was fun to hear
about each child’s accomplishments,
activities, and interests. These
Terrific Kids received recognition at
school during an assembly on October
15. After pictures, each parent
received one of the coveted bumper
stickers … My Child is a Terrific
Kid.

Terrific Kids
SPECIAL
PRESENTATIONS
Bob Wallace
congratulated John Parody,
Scott Fuller, Steve Hagerty,
and Carlos Cortez for earning
their permanent name badges. Although
no official records were reviewed,
Bob suggested that members in this
group may represent both the shortest
and the longest time ever used to
fulfill all the requirements. Each new
member was presented with his new badge.
THE
PROGRAM
Don Corbett took
us to see the difficulties being
experienced in Guatemala after the
terrible floods last year.
Don
had several DVDs we watched on the big
TV screen. A hospital in Santiago
Atitlan that we have supported in the
past experienced extensive flood damage
and Don encouraged us to add to
our Kiwanis Foundation contributions to
help the hospital rebuild. Both Don
Corbett and Hal Crockett and
their spouses have visited this town and
have personal knowledge of the poverty
and needs of the people who live there.

HAPPY &
SAD BUCKS
Ed Moulton … had
twenty Happy Bucks to
thank several club members for their
help connected with Ed’s recent move to
Pasadena. John Parady has made
sure Ed’s trash is out each week,
Peter Racicott “house sat” on
Halloween to preclude any “tricks” and
Steve Hagarty has helped with
transportation to our meetings.
Mary Gant … was
somewhat subdued but still had one
Happy Buck for the UCLA
football victory on Saturday.
(Additional info under “Birthdays.”)
Deborah Weirick …
really enjoyed introducing the Terrific
Kids today, but had a Grateful
and Happy Buck
because Committee Chair Pat
Flynn did all the organizing and
legwork.
Tom Slaughter …
had a very very Sad Buck
because he had been looking forward to
Bob Martin’s Veteran’s Day program last
week for a long time … and then had to
miss the meeting due to a business
emergency.
FACTS AND
FICTION
Music: piano
tunes by Martha Crockett, Ed
Moulton leading God Bless
America, Happy Birthday,
Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis
Opening:
flag salute by
Mel Wilson
and inspiration by
John Parody
Guests:
Honorary member Theo
Abelmann,
Wells
Fargo manager Suzanne
Kent
(who
also attended our Special Guest Day
luncheon), and spouse
Marilyn Corbett
Master of the
Cash Box: Scott Fuller
Birthdays: Daryal
Gant turned … older … on
Monday, and since he had to take out an
equity loan to cover his wife’s weekly
Kiwanis celebration for the recent UCLA
football victories he had enough to join
the Century Club. Bob Wallace
was glad he had a birthday on the 13th
and was even happier he still isn’t as
old as Paul or Clyde; all
those good feelings were worth a Century
Club to Bob. Theo Abelmann told
us she just caught up with Jack Benny
this month and had a nice celebration.
Fines: Those who
weren’t wearing their Kiwanis pins owed
one dollar, and it was another dollar
for those who didn’t shake the hand of
Secret Greeter Joel Smith.
Frosty’s Challenge:
There was stiff competition from Tom
Slaughter and Carl Christenson
and Jack Dawson threw his hat
in the ring, as well. Tom won
the applause for his story about the
beef shortage.
