FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Carl Christenson’s mom passed away, and Carl is in San Diego.  A card for everyone to sign was on the back Info Table.  Dick DeGrey is having a hard time getting around and enjoys all phone calls.  Carl Giesecke still enjoys phone calls in the afternoon, even though he is really starting to get mobile now.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Bob Wallace, chair of Membership Records, was pleased to present permanent badges to Tom Burrows, Linda Magarian, and Aaron Solomon Bob also had a Past President Kiwanis pin for Daryal Gant, who quipped “No one has been looking forward to this more than me.”  b

THE PROGRAM

Our own Bob Martin helped us celebrate Armistice Day (and Veteran’s Day) with a wonderful presentation on the events of World War I as illustrated through the songs of that time.  Bob looked handsome in his wide brimmed World War I military hat.  He had an entire bulletin board covered with sheet music from that era and played excerpts of many of the WWI songs as he gave us an overview – with many insights – into the events from 1914 through 1918.  Bob’s father fought in WWI and was very patriotic.  Bob grew up spending every November 11th with his dad, watching the local parade and visiting veterans at the Veterans Hospital.  Each year, in the evening, his dad would dress up in his WWI uniform and his mom would wear a pretty dress; they would roll up the carpet, put a candle in the middle of the floor, turn off the lights, turn the music on, and dance around the candle.  Such a lovely story!  No wonder Bob has so much enthusiasm for the history of our country.  Thanks, Bob, for such a great program.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Joel Petersen … was very Happy he was elected to the LC School Board and thought it was worth a Century Club.  He admitted he voted for himself but didn’t know how his wife voted.

Don Corbett … offered two Happy Bucks for the University of Arizona.

Mary Gant … was Sad about UCLA but $20 Happy over Joel’s election to the School Board.

Daryal Gant … was so Sad about UCLA football.

Pat Anderson … was very Happy about the School Board results.

Dave Spence … had a Sad Buck for Daryal Gant.  Something about a fundraiser they both attended, two women at Daryal’s knees, and Daryal didn’t remember a thing.

Tom Burrows … was excited and Happy to discover that Bob Martin’s guest, Professor Paul Hadley, had been his band instructor at USC.

Harriet Hammons … was thrice Happy.  Her first Happy Buck was for Joel Peterson’s election to the School Board.  Her second Happy Buck was for the help Dave Spence provided regarding a neighborhood matter.  The third, and biggest Happy Buck was for her son, John, who is just starting an electronics course; Harriet asked for our good thoughts and support.

Paul Westmoreland … had five Happy Bucks for the USC win.

Joel Peterson … had another Happy Buck for his son’s recent success during a horse back riding competition; he won four ribbons.  Joel said his son can’t do anything with a ball but is poetry in motion on a horse.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading This is My Country, Happy Birthday, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Harriet Hammons and inspiration by Diane DellaValle

Guests:  Bob Martin’s USC professor, Paul Hadley and his USC “college friends” Betty Ho and Dr. Val Clark.  Spouses (spice?) Martha Crockett and Marilyn Corbett also joined us.  Ken Lowe had the President of the LCHS Key Club introduce the seven other Key Club members in attendance.  The Key Club recently held a dance at the YMCA to raise money for the victims of the Pakistan earthquake.  The dance was a huge success.  Key Clubbers from eight other high schools were invited, 183 kids showed up, and they raised almost $1,200!  The LCHS Key Club also provided a lot of help at the recent Friends of the Library book sale.

Master of the Cash Box:  Nick Berkuta

Birthdays:  Aaron Solomon had a birthday on Oct. 17 and contributed his age plus $4 for a total of $40.  Clyde Hemphill celebrated his ¾ century b.d. and thought that was worth a Century Club.  Mel Wilson said he had the opportunity to pay his property tax by reaching another year of age; he is donating a $1 for each year – which came close to a Century Club.

Fines:  It cost $1 if you weren’t wearing your Kiwanis pin or didn’t have your voting stub.  Those who voted by absentee ballot cried foul.  An additional $1 for not shaking the hand of the secret greeter, new member Karl La Masa.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Guest Val Clark
