Serving the Children of the World

October 26, 2005

Wednesday

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

The Kiwanis Club of La Canada meets every Wednesday at Noon – Visitors Welcome

Van de Kamp Hall in Descanso Gardens  –  1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada, CA  91011

It was Wednesday again, a chill was in the air, Halloween was just around the corner as the Faithful gathered for our noon repast.  A crowd was gathering to shake hands with the FINK (aka secret greeter) to save a fine. President Paul Westmoreland had a wistful look in his eye as he punished the bell to call all to lunch.  Melodious live piano music by Martha Crockett filled the room with happiness.  As usual we gorged ourselves on the unusual (is it gourmet?) buffet as many struggled to cut the meat (?).

On the dot of 12:30 the Pres walloped the bell again and called upon Tom Slaughter to lead the pledge and Joel Smith to invoke us.  Then the Pres got serious and got out his clipboard (it does look more masculine than a purse) and greeted “we missed you glad to see you” folks.  The first was Pete Palermo who was discovered hiding behind a gray beard & mustache.  We all thought Pete was the program as he went on (and on) about his worldly exploits including a trip to Greece and then on a 50 foot sailboat etc., etc. He paid for this by joining the Century Club. Next was Paul Bobzin (your friendly Firestone dealer) who later related a sad buck.  Ed Moulton led us in “Welcome, Welcome back. Keeper of the money bucket was Karl La Masa  Birthday’s & Anniversary's were next on his agenda as he hunted down Bea Cirar (who had just returned from a trip to Maui) and then on to Glen Pettit who gifted the Century Club.  Bachy Bachmayer celebrated his Birthday and also joined the Century Club in honor of the four 89 year olds in our club.  The Pres was miffed because Mary & Daryal Gant weren’t here so he could get $20 from Mary for the U.C.L.A. win and I think an anniversary.  Ed was up again to lead us in Happy Birthday (2 times).  Missing Kiwanis pin bad guys were fined a big buck (hint: Bob Wallace said he would bring pins to sell next week, real cheap, so take a few home and save $$$).

GUESTS:   A guest of Frank Ragazzi was Rozanne Morrison which of course prompted a “Hi Neighbor”.

The Fink (I mean the secret greeter) was Tom Burrows.

HAPPY, SAD, MAD ETC. BUCKS:

Paul Bobzin had a Sad buck as his Son’s house was burglarized and they stole Paul’s almost new Lexus (300,000 miles on it and still going strong).

Ed Moulton was happy that Margaret & Bill Watts sold his home yesterday

Jeb Long was happy that the University of Texas was now the nations #1 football team.

Harriet Hammons was happy her Aunt & Uncle had returned

Frosty Boyd was happy he saw “Tea House of the August Moon” (in Oct) at the Center theatre

Bob Wallace happily spent the weekend with a 3 year old

Karl La Masa had a happy buck as he had made peace with Victoria’s Secret (?) something about Christmas décor up too early.

Tom Slaughter was sad he had to leave early

The Pres got a couple of bucks from Hal Crockett by congratulating Hal & Martha on their photo and write up in the paper about their 63d Wedding Anniversary but they didn’t mention Kiwanis.  He then called for a Standing Ovation for such a great achievement.
