The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

November 9th will be a great day to bring a guest for lunch.  Our own Bob Martin is planning a very special Armistice Day tribute to veterans.  Bob’s father fought in World War I and he has a wonderful story about the way his parents celebrated Armistice Day every year.  Bob is passionate about his love for our country and is a historian extraordinaire.  This is a program to share with others.  Plan ahead and invite your guests now.

Next week:  Invocation by Joel Smith

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pat Anderson reminded everyone about the mixer on Thursday, October 21, at the LCF City Hall.  She was bragging about great food and “adult” drinks.

Howard Backer stood in for Bachy and told us in no uncertain terms what he expected from us in support of Children’s Hospital.  You have to give Howard credit for being clear and concise.

Steve Hagarty explained that everyone in the Club is expected to attend at least one InterClub each year.  Steve will have a schedule worked out soon.

Mary Gant wants everyone to remember the November 8 election, especially because our own Joel Petersen is running for the School Board.  Mary has yard signs to share supporting Joel.

Bob Wallace reported a very successful Travel Adventure program last Saturday night.  One of our biggest crowds ever, and many single ticket sales.  If you weren’t there you missed a really good trip to New Zealand including a daring ride in an ultra-light plane that seemed so real a number of people felt a bit queasy afterwards.

Pat Flynn would like as many members as possible to stop by La Cañada Elementary School on Friday at 10:30 a.m. for a quick Terrific Kids presentation.  Deborah Weirick will be making the presentation.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Carl Gieseke is starting to get really enthusiastic about getting well and is still enjoying our calls.

THE PROGRAM

The subject was the Bob Hope Airport and Victor Gill returned after four years to bring us another update.  The airport has celebrated it’s 75th anniversary.  This coincided with the national Centennial Flight celebration year.  The airport was actually renamed the Bob Hope Airport on December 17th, which was the actual day of the first Wright brothers’ flight.  The airport has recovered from the downturn after 9/11 when there was a 35% drop-off in passengers.  The terminal was expanded by 40,000 square feet (mostly underground) to make room for the new Electronic Detection System, and the airport police force was raised from 15 to 30 police officers.  After the FAA decided it didn’t want to take over the airport, the City of Burbank finally reached an agreement with the airport.  There will be no planning for expansion for the next ten years.  Southwest Airlines still handles 65-75% of the passengers at Bob Hope Airport, but Delta has begun a nonstop flight to Atlanta everyday which is very popular and almost always full.  Jet Blue is another new airline at the airport and has a non-stop flight to New York everyday.  Victor said the challenges for the next ten years include maintaining convenience for the passengers, finding money for improvements, and improving valet parking.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Mary Gant … is still bragging about UCLA and gave another Happy twenty bucks for their football victory last week.  She commented she didn’t really think USC had a victory last week, and Prez Paul must have had his doubts too; he didn’t match her twenty …  and only put in a dollar for USC.

Jack Dawson … was Happy Laurel Fuller joined us today and had a bunch of great things to say about her!

Clyde Hemphill … was very Happy because the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event netted $16-17,000 this year.  All that hard work was definitely worth the effort.

Prez Paul … had a wonderful weekend in Palm Springs where he and Elaine attended the Desert Swing Fest.  He was Happy they had a chance to dance a lot.

Jim Reynolds … was Happy he submitted one of his poems to a poetry contest.  He not only won a prize, but also had his poem published at the very beginning of a book of poetry.  Jim was encouraged to read the poem to us; it was very touching and put into words how many of us feel but can’t express.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Pat Day,  Ed Moulton leading God Bless America, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Bill Scherkey and inspiration by Mike Leininger

Guests:  Laurel Fuller was introduced by her dad, Scott Fuller.

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:

Master of the Cash Box:  newest member Karl La Masa

Fines:  same … same … were you wearing your Kiwanis pin? Did you shake the hand of Secret Greeter Carlos Cortez?  It was a buck for each infraction again.

Frosty’s Challenge:  There was definitely a challenge today, as Frank Ragazzi had a legal flood joke (roe or wade), and George Lutes got the most laughs with a quarterback story.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Bill Scherkey
