An updated list of Club and Foundation
Committee assignments will be on the back
table for the next several
weeks.
The Walk of Fame has been instituted by our
Kiwanis District Governor as a fun way to
measure our success at bringing in new
members. Recruit two new members for a star
on the District Walk of Fame banner. Laurel
Patric, our Lt. Governor wants our Division
banner to be the longest in the District.
Another Kiwanis initiative for building
membership involves earning a Bronze Key for
bringing in one new member, a Silver Key for
two, and a Gold Key for three new members.
Chances to win very nice prizes at our
Kiwanis International Convention in Montreal
go with the keys!
Volunteers are being recruited to be
chaperones at the upcoming Key Leaders
Conference next month.

NEW
MEMBER INDUCTION
Karl La Masa was
inducted by Membership Chair Bob Wallace.
Karl’s sponsor is Paul
Westmoreland. Karl is a retired
Glendale school teacher and teaching seems
to be a genetic trait. Karl’s wife
is also a school teacher and Karl’s
daughter is principal at Dunsmore Elementary
School in La Crescenta. Bob filled
Karl’s hands with temporary badge,
signature sheet, information packet, etc.
The short ceremony ended with Bob’s
words of advise. . . “and Howard will
be billing you.” Welcome Karl!!!
CRAFT
TALK by Nick Berkuta
Nick was born in
Delaware in ’46 but didn’t stay on the east
coast very long. In 1949 when his sister
was just three weeks old, his adventuresome
parents packed up everything the family
owned and took off for California via Route
66. They were pulling a 35 foot trailer
Nick’s father built, and the trip took
three weeks. A product of local schools,
Nick received his AA from Glendale
College, his BA from Cal State L.A., and his
MBA from the University of LaVerne. He
joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1969, had
a career full of very interesting positions
within the department, and just retired this
last year. Nick and his delightful
wife, Mary Ann, have lived in La Cañada for 30 years. They have one son who
is a firefighter, their daughter is a flight
attendant, and their youngest is just
starting college. Nick has always
been a volunteer in the community –
everything from being a Scout Master to
serving on several LCF City commissions.
Nick has a personal credo: Do something
big while there’s still time to put it in
your autobiography.”
THE PROGRAM
Alex Leon
gave us a great overview of Glendale College
– when and how it started, its many stages
of growth and what is planned for the
future. The average age of students is 28
years old, and a hand count verified the
members of our Club help keep that average
up so high. Glendale College opened in 1927
with 139 students and the average teacher’s
salary was very good - $2,700 per year. In
1933 the earthquake leveled all the
buildings; temporary quarters were used for
several years. In 1935 a bond measure was
passed to rebuild the campus. From no
buildings in 1933 to 25,000 students in
2005. Glendale College has an excellent
program of university level courses; 30% of
students go on to a four year college or
university. When you consider over 60% of
the students work at least twenty hours per
week, that is quite remarkable.
HAPPY
& SAD BUCKS
Mary Gant … was
Happy she could keep donating her
$20 each week – contingent on a UCLA
football victory – and also put in $20 for
the week before when she was gone.
Joan Peters … was
Happy two of the girls chosen to
be Rose Parade princesses this year are from
Flintridge Prep, and Michelle is an
active member of our Key Club.
Don Corbett … was
Sad he tore his rotator cuff but
Happy the doctors could fix
it.
Clyde Hemphill … was
Happy Mary Gant received the
Gil Smith Award this year as she was most
deserving.
Jack Dawson … loves
the Pasadena Symphony and was particularly
Happy there was such a fine
guitarist performing last week.
Daryal Gant … was
Happy he didn’t need to stay up
late working on an agenda for the Wednesday
meeting and was Sad Paul did.
Harriet Hammons … had
a Happy Buck for being honored
as Rookie of the Year and then a second
Happy Buck for a great day at
Disneyland.
Howard Backer … was
throwing Happy Bucks around -
$9 because Mary Gant received the Gil
Smith Award, $1 because the installation
dinner was so successful, and $10 because
Harriet Hammons was the Rookie of the
Year.
Joel Petersen … Happy
he could share such an enjoyable
dinner with Daryal attending a Breast
Cancer fundraiser at the Huntington.
Pat Flynn … is
Happy he will be involved with
Terrific Kids again and Sad because he is
already looking for a presenter on Fridays
at Palm Crest.
Doris Horwith … had a
great trip to New England and was Happy
she picked a lovely week in between all
the bad weather.
