Our first Board Meeting for the new Kiwanis year was held Thursday evening.  This was mostly a “get organized” meeting.  We are off to a good start and looking forward to an active year.  Howard Backer, our Treasurer, had the most exciting news:  our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting fundraiser in September was definitely a financial success as well as a social success.  The accounting is not completed, but the net income (which will be used to support our Foundation projects) will exceed $15,000.  This is up from a net of approximately $6,000 in 2004 and “breakeven” in 2003.  This event was the original vision of Daryal and Mary Gant, and we owe them MANY THANKS for both the vision and their exceptional efforts to implement the vision!

Our Travel Adventures series starts next week with an enticing program on New Zealand.  A little history for newer members:  The Travel Adventures was started as a fundraising project by our Club over forty years ago and is still one of our significant fundraising projects for our Foundation.  The Travel Adventure programs are “live” presentations by the original filmmakers who share their personal experiences and insights.  The photography has always been excellent, and now the films are all produced using the finest digital cinema techniques.  Our Club sells season tickets for $40.  Single event tickets can be purchased at the door for $8.  Our Club policy is to send every member four season tickets.  You are encouraged to use them yourself, use them as gifts, and/or sell them to someone else.  Howard Backer is the person to contact if you need more season tickets.  Also, if you are unable to use any of the tickets you have received, you need to return them to Howard to get a credit on your Foundation account.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Anthony Portantino was standing in for Joy Gifford to announce the Candidates’ Forum for the LCF School Board race.  The Forum is coming up soon, will be held at the LCHS auditorium and is organized by the League of Women Voters.

Pat Anderson had on her Chamber Hat and reminded everyone about the Mixer on October 20.  The City of La Cañada Flintridge is hosting this mixer which will held at the City Hall.  The Chamber is also sponsoring a Black Tie Masquerade Ball fundraiser next Saturday evening.

Bob Wallace asked everyone who isn’t going to the Masquerade Ball to come to our Club’s first-of-the-season Travel Adventure on October 15th.  An armchair tour of New Zealand definitely has a lot of appeal if you don’t like flying in an airplane for hours on end.  Our own Flintridge Prep Key Club will be providing refreshments; this is one of their many fundraisers.  If you haven’t ever attended a Travel Adventure, give it a try.  You may get “hooked” like many of us already are.

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us our donations to the Children’s Hospital tubs on our lunch tables each week allowed our Club to make a very nice annual gift to the hospital.

Daryal Gant donated two brand new printer cartridges as a fundraiser for our Club.  The highest bidder turned out to be Paul Westmoreland.  He gets the cartridges and our Kiwanis Foundation will get the cash.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Many thanks to the Club members who took the time to call Carl Gieseke.   He has really enjoyed the phone calls and would enjoy having a chance to visit with other Club members.  Even if you’ve never met Carl, give him a call.  He loves to be updated on our Club activities and can tell you some interesting stories about our Club history.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Joe Thompson was our La Cañadan of the Year for 2005, and Diane DellaValle has spent several months putting together a Memory Book for Joe.  Diane presented this lovely album to Joe, which included pictures and newspaper articles that document Joe’s activity in our community this last year.

THE PROGRAM

Diane DellaValle introduced our very own Tom Burrows, who gave us a historical trip through the early days of television.  The clips from many of the early TV programs brought back memories for many Club members and seemed very odd to the younger people in our Club.  Some interesting facts:  Roosevelt was the first president to be on TV.  The type of engineering that the English used to develop their air raid system was similar to early TV technology, so Britain was actually ahead of the U.S. and started transmitting TV programs in 1937.  In 1939 the BBC was transmitting a Disney cartoon when the transmissions were cut because of the German air raids.  After the war when the BBC turned their TV programming back on, the first program was the completion of the Disney cartoon that had been playing when the station was turned off at the beginning of the war.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Jack Dawson … Happy he and Barbara had such a great vacation exploring Chicago and the Great Lakes.  He offered to give a Wednesday lunch program about the many canals of that region.

Hal Crockett … had five Happy Bucks because his son was asked to compose a musical piece for the USC 125th anniversary program this weekend.

Ex-Prez Daryal Gant … was rested and Happy because he didn’t have to stay up late last night getting organized for our Wednesday lunch meeting.  First time in a year!

Frank Ragazzi … was also Happy to be out of office and able to sit and visit with the  ordinary folks again instead of at the Head Table.

Howard Backer … spent four relaxing days in Mammoth last week and was Happy he forgot about everything here in La Cañada – including his duties as our Club Treasurer.  (Howard didn’t realize he was “coming out of retirement” when he agreed to become our Treasurer several years ago!)

Pat Anderson … had a Happy Buck in honor of all the people who have been choosing to shop locally in La Cañada Flintridge. The sales tax collected is one of our city’s major sources of income.

Jack Dawson … had another Happy Buck because Glen Petitt rescued him last week when Jack’s car wouldn’t start.

Ken Lowe … was celebrating because his house was getting hooked to the sewers while we had lunch.  After the long wait, he was Super Happy!   (Of course, our city mayor took a little heat at his lunch table from some Club members who had “paid up” more than a year ago and hadn’t yet seen a sewer construction crew on their street.)

Ed Moulton … was Happy his move to Pasadena went smoothly but Sad to not be living in La Cañada any more.  (Ed is one of those people who always look on the bright side, though.  He is already scheming to start a new Kiwanis Club at the retirement home where he and Connie are now living.  Ed’s new contact info:  1575 East Washington Blvd., Pasadena  91104.  Phone:  626-794-0345 E-mail is:  edmoulton@charter.net)

Joe Thompson … gave ten Happy Bucks as a special Thanks to Diane DellaValle for all the effort she put into his Memory Album.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading God Bless America, Hi Neighbor, Welcome Back and Come On Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Chuch Gulick and inspiration by Frosty Boyd

Guests:  Joe Thompson, Karl LaMasa, and Martha Crocket

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:  Carlos Cortez

Master of the Cash Box:  Nick Berkuta

Birthdays:  Bea Cirar and the Prez himself.  Paul joined the Century Club and threw in an extra dollar so we wouldn’t sing Happy Birthday

Fines:  The Secret Greeter was Chuck Gulick and not too many had missed shaking his hand.  Those who weren’t wearing their Kiwanis pins also had to pony up a dollar, and then the cash box was full.  Anthony Portantino claims he lost his pin but got no leniency.  (If you have lost your pin, contact Club Secretary, Bill Scherkey.  He will order a new pin for you and Treasurer Howard Backer will send you the bill.   The pins are not expensive . . . and certainly cheaper than a dollar fine every week.)

Frosty’s Challenge:  Lloyd Welch won the applause for his political joke although Jim Ackland and Frosty came in a close second and third.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Daryal Gant

The Dinuba Challenge:  This Club member lived in Pennsylvania three years and in Temecula three years, attended Glendale High School and Glendale College, has two children and three granddaughters, and has donated a kidney.  Can you guess who this Dinuba Challenger is?
