FIFTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

It was a delightful evening filled with good conversation, delicious food, lots of humor and a fun program.  We even squeezed in the de-installation of last year’s officers by 2004/2005 Lt. Governor Nilo Pineda and the installation of this year’s officers and directors by 2005/2006 Lt. Governor Laurel Patric.  Master of Ceremonies, Joel Smith, started out with introductions and quickly put everyone in his/her place.

A surprise presentation was made by Greg Brown on behalf of Anthony Portantino (who gave Greg the wrong time and place).  The La Cañada Flintridge City Council honored Prez Daryal for his meritorious service to the LCF community and made him an honorary citizen. (Daryal lives in La Crescenta.)  Daryal graciously accepted the commendation on the condition he didn’t receive a LCF sewer bill or parcel tax.

Incoming President Paul Westmoreland had a gracious acceptance speech and gave us each one of his new Kiwanis business cards.  On the back of the card is Paul’s theme for the year:  “A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden   The evening ended with a most enjoyable show Paul compiled of professional ballroom dancers, including some segments starring Paul and his lovely companion, Elaine Alexander dancing the swing.

The Prez sez . . .  not much ‘cause he was de-installed tonight.

Daryal did get the podium long enough to make two very special presentations of the Rookie of the Year Award and the Gil Smith Award.  He chose the two well-deserving recipients with the help of a committee of six past presidents.

The Rookie of the Year Award honors a new member who performs over and above what is expected of new members, demonstrates leadership, and gets results.  Prez Daryal presented the Rookie of the Year Award to Harriet Hammons Harriet was raising her hand to volunteer before she was even inducted as a new member and immediately became the Chair of the Social Committee.  Shortly thereafter Harriet offered to head up Daryal’s new Children’s Literacy project.

The Gil Smith Award has been presented every year since 1974 in honor of Gil Smith who was a member of our club from March 1960 until September 1982.  Gil was the director of the La Cañada Youth House and was the inspiration and guiding influence of many of the local youth.  He was a big supporter of all youth athletic activities.  Gil was a quiet, unassuming man, a devout Methodist, and had not an enemy in the world.  Prez Daryal presented the Gil Smith Award to Mary Gant who spearheaded many projects this year and gave her heart and soul to almost every Club project.   Mary has been extremely active in our Club since she joined.  This year she also took on the unofficial position of Assistant President.
