BOARD MEETING  -  Kiwanis Club and Foundation

Thursday at 7:00 p.m., La Cañada CitiBank

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

 The Prez sez . . .

Our $600 check came in from the Glendale Kiwanis Club for our share of the Great Duck Race sales.

A big turnout of Club members and spouses is expected for the installation of our new President, Paul Westmoreland on the evening of September 28.  Call Howard Backer if you haven’t signed up yet.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

A repeat of last week – since most of us didn’t pay attention.  The number is:  248-6166.  Call Carl Gieseke at home and have a chat.  Even if you don’t know Carl, he loves to visit with Kiwanis members.  Carl joined our Kiwanis Club in 1963 and was president in 1970.  He also was a YMCA board member/director.  Carl is recovering from a bad fall and is housebound.  None of his children live locally.

VOTING

The nomination by the election committee of Steve Hagerty to fill the office of President-Elect and of Nick Berkuta to fill the position vacated by Steve on the Board of Directors was approved by a voice vote.  A big thanks to these two guys who stepped up to the plate when the need arose!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ed Moulton will be moving to a retirement home in Pasadena in early October.  He will still be active in our club – and can catch a ride over for $1.80 with Access Taxi.  However, he won’t be able to handle some of his Kiwanis projects and is looking for volunteers to take over the newspaper collections at LCE.  This is a new project for LCE.

Paul Westmoreland announced that only two Kiwanis members hadn’t attended an InterClub this year.  He also corrected the Prez’ statement last week – Dinuba has a new Super Wal Mart that covers five acres (not a Costco).  Then we heard about the origin of the name Dinuba and a commercial for the Raison Festival being held there this week.

Mary Gant invited everyone to come to her house (and Daryal’s, too) this Friday for the Tournament of Roses Happy Hour.  There will also be a campaign kick-off for Joel Peterson on Monday.

Bachy Bachmayer encouraged us to contribute to the Children’s Hospital tubs on our tables.

Clyde Hemphill told us there were flyers about flu shots on the back table.  Flu is already going around at the schools this year.

Bob Wallace requested any last changes for the membership directory that will be “put to rest” and published in a week or two.  Bob was also promoting the October 1st fundraiser for the Barkley Community Center.

 CRAFT TALK by Tom Burrows

Tom was raised in Tuscon, Arizona.  Music was his hobby from a very early age.  By fourth grade he was already in a band playing clarinet, and then later - drums.   Tom was also in the Tuscon Boys Choir.  In junior high he delivered newspapers to earn money to by 75 cent Vicor records with Big Band music.  He took piano lessons, and taught himself jazz.  In high school, Tom was in a swing band playing the drums at first and then later the piano.  The band played every Friday night for the weekly high school dance.  On Saturday nights Tom played piano and drums with a group of professional musicians at a variety of nightclubs. (There were three military bases nearby, and Tuscon was a swinging town on Saturday nights.)  On Sundays he was playing at the church.  After graduating from USC with a degree in music, Uncle Sam “invited” Tom to join the Army.  After becoming an officer, he served as a Tank Platoon Leader in Germany.  Off-duty he was encouraged by his peers to play the piano to “attract the girls.”  Back in Tucson, Tom spent two years at a radio station.  When he moved to Los Angeles he first worked for Channel 13, then later worked at ABC and KCET.  His final professional move was to a teaching position at Cal State Northridge; Tom said this was his favorite lifetime job.  That ended Tom’s five minutes – but there’s more to come, as Tom is presenting one of our noon programs this fall on the early days of TV.  Aren’t we lucky to be able to enjoy Tom’s music every week?!!!

THE PROGRAM

The Prez told us his year as Club President had been a million dollar experience, but he didn’t want a nickel more.  Some of the major accomplishments this year included a net increase in membership of six, the appointment of Clyde Hemphill as parliamentarian and Bob Martin as historian, the establishment of a Finance and Investment Committee, the beginning of our Children’s Literacy Project, and the addition of Jelly Roll (who is retiring).  Then the Prez gave his own version of Happy Bucks – thanking many members for their special contributions during the past year.  What a good reminder to all of us of our seen and often unseen member contributions of time and talent to Help the Children of the World.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Steve Hagarty … wasn’t sure if he was Happy or Sad for his brother who lives in Montana and just accepted the position of Kiwanis Lt. Governor for his fifth term.  Steve will  know more when he actually gets to talk to his brother.

Patsy Christensen … was Happy to announce she became a great grandmother again this morning.

Anthony Portantino … was Happy his daughter was interested enough in Key Club to attend her first meeting at LCHS.  She is a freshman this year.

Rick Lazare … was Happy (and so was Paul Westmoreland) he finally made it to an InterClub.

Tom Gilfoy … was Happy all the oak from his back yard was cut up.  He has a seven year supply and would be happy to give some away – just remember the wood still needs to be split.

Harriet Hammons  … was Happy she was able to be on the Prez’ team this year.  She said Daryal really measured up and presented the Prez with a cute yardstick.

Mary Gant … was Happy she could contribute the twenty dollars she pledged last week on the contingency that UCLA would beat Oklahoma on Saturday.  She’ll continue to be $20 a week Happy as long as UCLA continues to win.

Jim Reynolds … was Happy he had such a great vacation, including a cruise through the Panama Canal.

Tom Slaughter … was Happy for the good work of Dr. Perry removing a skin cancer on his arm.

Al Perry … was Happy and Thankful for all the good work Ken Lowe does with our Key Club at LCHS.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows – playing your requests for Tips for Kids, Ed Moulton leading This is My Country, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Glen Pettit and inspiration by Prez Daryal – who reminded us that Kathryn Graham, Editor of the Washington Post, said it is most important to love what you do and think that it matters.

Guests:  Paul Westmoreland introduced Karl La Masa, who was here for his third visit and was completing a new member application.  Ken Lowe introduced seven Key Club members and also announced that the first meeting of the LCHS Key Club had an overflow crowd!  Several of the Key Clubbers thanked us for helping with their trip to the International Key Club Convention in Atlanta this summer.

Master of the Cash Box:  Clyde Hemphill

Anniversaries:  None

Birthdays:  Tom Slaughter on September 18; he pledged a dollar for each year … just a few bucks under $50.  Lloyd Welch has a birthday next week and had an anniversary last week; his pledge covered both events.  John Parady added the second 50% of his Century Club pledge.  Melinda Thompson was celebrating her birthday today and made a Century Club donation.

Jelly Roll Revelation:  The winners of the women’s division of the Tacky Top contest were Harriet Hammons (runner up) and Linda Magarian.  Men’s division winner was Tom Burrows and Nick Berkuta (runner up).  Melinda Thompson received honorable mention for having the most technical Tacky Top.

Frosty’s Challenge:  There were four contenders this week, but Tom Slaughter received the loudest clap vote for his story about a smart donkey.  Frosty, Frank Ragazzi and Elizabeth Calciano were in the competition.  Frank also cracked up just trying to read a funny “Quickie.”

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Joel Smith won the pot and will be selling raffle tickets next week.
