BOARD MEETING  -  Kiwanis Club and Foundation

Thursday at 7:00 p.m., La Cañada CitiBank

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

The Prez sez . .
  • Thanks to TOM BURROWS for his piano playing…and a reminder to members to contribute to the “TIPS” jar on the piano…for the children of the world.”

  • “Next week will be “Tacky Shirt Day”.  Please wear that which is really tacky!!

  •  “There will be no luncheon meeting on September 28th as the Installation Banquet will be held that evening at the Oakmont Country Club: 6:30 cocktail hour and  dinner at 7 p.m.”

  • “Our Board of Directors will be deciding on the way our club will contribute to  the victims of “Hurricane Katrina” and our membership will be notified soon.

  • President GANT once again reminded the club of the importance of knowing the  “Kiwanis Theme.”  “Be forewarned,” he admonished, “to know it by memory!”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ED MOULTON  requested members to talk to him if a person has sponsored three or more members in our club.

JOAN PETERS noted that it is only 17 days until our Third Wine & Gourmet Food event and she asked for help.  Specific helpers who will need persons to help them,     included:  CARL CHRISTENSEN, DIANE DellaValle, CLYDE HEMPHILL, LINDA MAGARIAN, and NICK BERKUTA.

JOAN gave a persuasive (almost pleading)

summary of needs for a successful event.  MARY GANT again requested items for  the “Silent Auction.”

BOB WALLACE announced an upgrading of our membership book (“The Blue Book”)

requested any changes in information be given to him as soon as possible.

“BACHY’’ BACHMAYER, this time with a personal story of help received from the Children’s Hospital in L.A., asked for donations in the containers on the tables.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Dr FORREST “FROSTY” BOYD noted that CARL GIESEKE is improving, with much

more mobility…..and calls or notes would be welcome.

Brief mention was made of ED MOULTON’S sprained back….but ‘MR KIWANIS’

appeared to be quite lively at the meeting today.

CRAFT TALK

by SCOTT FULLER:  Not only a native Californian, but a native La Cañadan (who lives on

Descanso Drive) and who grew up with a LCF background (Class of ’71).  With experience in photography, he worked with his father for 20 years with printing, marketing and

graphics, changing to computerization (especially with internet services which he has

designed) and he spoke proudly, for example, of the “Pasadena Kids Page”…Welcome, Scott!

THE PROGRAM

GEORGE LOZANO, Executive Director of The Covenant House, located in Hollywood (and Oakland, CA), which exists to help care for homeless and/or runaway young people. Founded in New York, the House has been in Hollywood for 16 years helping kids who have been abused or who are runaways, even thrown out of their homes.  Finding them in abandoned areas, staff members provided shelter, medical treatment, employment counseling, and education.  The outreach program is for ages 11-23, and shelter, 18-20.

MR LOZANO showed a video stressing testimonials of youngsters who have received genuine help from The Covenant House.  An impressive program well presented.
