INSTALLATION OF 2005-2006 OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

Wednesday – Evening Installation Dinner and Meeting at Oakmont Country Club

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

The Prez sez . . .

Tacky Top Day will be here in two weeks.  Plan ahead – you could win a prize and might even get your picture in the paper.

Diane DellaValle has been writing up a storm.  She submitted a story about our Lotta Leg Day, and the Outlook published the story and a picture of the prize winners.

Another date to remember is September 28th.  This evening meeting will be held at Oakmont Country Club and there will be no noon meeting.  Dinner and and change of venue will be a pleasant change, and we will be installing our 2005-2006 Officers and Directors.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

q                   Bill Scherkey is heading for Minneapolis on Saturday, so needs all the month end Committee Reports ASAP.

q                   Pat Anderson there were still some seats left for John Garamendi’s presentation on September 21 at The Dish.  The State Insurance Commissioner will be speaking at the Chamber’s Business Breakfast.  Call the LCF Chamber to make a reservation.

q                   Mary Gant reminded us to keep selling our tickets for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting.  Nick Berkuta is still seeking ads for the program, and Silent Auction items are still being sought.  If you haven’t used your postcards, please return them as some members need more.

q                   Backy informed us that Children’s Hospital has just broken ground on a new building and our contributions to the tubs on our tables will help support this very special hospital.

q                   Bob Wallace asked everyone to review their personal page in our Kiwanis Blue Directory book.  If any information needs to be updated, please contact Bob.  An update is in the works.

q                   Bob Wallace covered another topic and let everyone know they would be receiving tickets for the Travel Adventure series soon.  If every member could sell two tickets and use two tickets, we would have a lot of fun and another successful fundraiser.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Ed Moulton turned up lame with a strained back; rumor has it he was playing around with his wife.  Carl Gieseke is still cooped up at home recovering from his broken hip and loves to visit on the phone.

CRAFT TALK by Aaron Solomon

No one has actually been “timed” in a long time, but Aaron was a good sport and tried to condense his life into five minutes of highlights.  Not easy to do!  Aaron’s family moved twelve times and he lived in eight states before he graduated from high school.  Aaron started out to be an aerospace engineer when he went to college, and ended up with several degrees including ones in psychology and public administration.  Aaron worked at several non-profit organizations before taking the position of Executive Director at the Roger Barkley Community Center five years ago.

THE PROGRAM

Dr. Bruce Bacheri gave a very quick and interesting presentation on Cardiac Risk Factors.  He stressed there are many more risk factors we can control than risk factors that are out of our control.  His graphs and slides emphasized the things we can do to improve our odds.  Dr. Bacheri discussed life style solutions and medications.  Many of us were pleased he was able to answer our questions after the meeting was over.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Jim Edwards … noted that football season has started and is Happy that USC is still undefeated.

Linda Magarian … didn’t know if she was Happy or Sad.  She presented the Prez with a poster full of pictures of Dinuba that she took a few weeks ago.  (Editor’s correction from last week:  the Dinuba High School is known as the Emperors.)

Jim Reynolds … is Happily anticipating his three week vacation to Florida where he will meet with his fellow submarine buddies from WWII and visit with relatives.

Mary Gant … was very Happy that UCLA is also undefeated this football season.

Dick Barley … donated five Happy Bucks because his father was named Clyde and was a very nice man.  Dick got away with making a snide remark about our lovable Clyde because he donated five Happy Bucks to the Children of the World.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading America the Beautiful and Hi Neighbor.

Opening: flag salute by George Lutes and inspiration by Karl Johnson.

Guests:  Dick Barley, President of the A.M. Club, never misses a beat and had an interesting and/or humorous introduction for A.M. Club members Dean Deardoff, Lynn Jarvis, Carl Almquist, Bill Barber,  Bennie Haskin, John Loussarian and John Richardson.  Bruce Campbell of the Foothill Leader didn’t need an introduction and we are happy he chooses to join us for lunch so often.  Mary Gant introduced her surrogate grandchildren – Luz and Marissa Tirado.  They both raced in the Soap Box Derby and our club sponsored a week at summer camp for both of them.  Mike Leininger didn’t need to introduce Jim Stratton, but we were all happy to hear Jim has submitted his membership application.  Dr. Lewis Hamilton also joined us for lunch.

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:   Jim Edwards and Mark Alexander

Master of the Cash Box:  Clyde Hemphill

Anniversaries:  Hal and Julia Thomas met in 1946 when Hal returned from WWII.  Julia was the sister of a friend and they met at a wedding.  Hal is still in love with his tall brunette after 56 years of marriage and that was worth a Century Club donation.  Ken and Marjorie Lowe have been trying to keep up with Hal and Julia and celebrated their 49th anniversary on August 30.  Ken also joined the Century Club.

Birthdays:  Karl Johnson will be celebrating on September 1 and offered $25 for the Children of the World (one dollar for each year, he said).  There should be a special fine for tall tales!  Nick Berkuta will celebrate on Labor Day and pledged $5; the Prez was gentle with him because Nick is a new member.

Fines:  Jim Edwards couldn’t fake out our Prez and had to pony up some bucks because he couldn’t recite the new Kiwanis Defining Statement which we had practiced earlier in the meeting.  On the other hand, Tom Burrows gave a perfect recitation.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers

dedicated to changing the world,

one child and one community at a time.

Frosty’s Challenge:  The quality of the jokes has really improved in the last few weeks, and the Prez has had to appoint a Table Committee to judge who is the winner.  Frosty, Ed Moulton, Karl Johnson, and Howard Backer vied for the prize, and this editor forgot to write down who won.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  George Lutes won and will be selling tickets next week.
